It can be an expensive addiction, but being hooked on exercise and running marathons seems like a good way to spend money and stimulate the economy.

Good for you that you are dreaming big, 50 in 50 by 50.

I could never do a full ironman. I did a 1/2 ironman and thought I was going to die.

I am with you.
It's not that the gadgets are required, it is that your mind makes them become necessities. And some of them are useful - my Garmin helped me get much faster. But most of them? Nope. And did you notice that the price of running shoes keeps going up? And while I can buy a bike off of Craigslist, I can't buy my running shoes used...Ana-Maria

I hear you on the marathon fees...it's one of the things that keeps me doing just a couple/year closer to home. I have several friends who want me to do Chicago...but the registration is ~$100 and that doesn't touch lodging, transportation, meals out, swag...

Luckily there are some great, smaller marathons that are more budget-oriented. I kind of like not wading through 10k+ other bodies, too.
