cha cha cha chia! Running Food

Confession #1:  I'm probably one of the only runners left on earth who has NOT yet read "Born to Run" by Chris McDougall. You know, the one about the Tarahumara tribe who runs a bajillion miles a day barefoot, fueled by their chia seeds (or something like that)?  It's on my book shelf...I just haven't gotten to it yet. Sorry Mr. McDougall, it's nothing personal. Just the life of a crazy running mom.  One day I'll get to it, I swear.

Confession #2:  I don't eat as well as I should, or as well as the people who know me as a fitness health freak probably *think* I do.  Heck, just last night Twitter suggested I follow Hostess Snack cakes and I got a little giddy inside thinking about cupcakes and ding dongs, I won't lie.

I'm trying to make a change. And like any lifestyle change, slow and steady is the way to go.  Everyday I try to incorporate more and more healthy items and less and less junk food, though I will cave in to the occasional Taco Bell and not feel (too) guilty about it.

But I am also a picky eater and there are some things I just DO NOT like...one of the big ones being seafood.  I mean, I'll eat it occasionally. Fish and I do not loathe each other, it's just not one of my all time favorites.  Fish however, are a huge source of those awesome omega fats that we all need.  So I turn to chia seeds.   Most people have never even heard of these little guys, and the look on their faces when I say yes, it is INDEED the same seeds used to grow chia pets is almost always priceless.

Chia is an itty bitty little seed that is high in fiber, omega 3,'s 6's and 9's (in the correct ratio your body needs), antioxidants, and vitamin C. It  has 16% of your daily value of calcium, plus boron and magnesium, which help your bones absorb the calcium. It can help lower cholesterol, increase energy levels, level blood sugar, induce weight loss and aid intestinal regularity (woo!) And the best part is that its' all natural, a plant, not manufactured supplements.  So if you are into eating as natural and clean as possible, it's a great addition to your diet.

When I first started eating chia, I just bought whatever I could find.  But like anything else, you get what you pay for. That's why I was excited to find the brand "Running Food" chia.

Now, I'll be honest with you, it's hard to review the taste of chia, because frankly, I can't taste it. I mix it in with things like  yogurt, smoothies, salads, etc and I really do not even notice it's there.  So I'm not going to tell you that "Running Food chia is the best thing I've ever tasted!".  But I will tell you WHY I will continue to choose their brand over other chia:

- Chia is Micro-Milled , a process that doesn't apply any crushing pressure or heat that could degrade the nutritional value of the chia

- Running Food is a raw power food, a complete protein, is gluten free, Vegan, Kosher, and GMO free. The equipment is used ONLY to mill chia, so no chance of cross contamination.

- It's packaged and milled in New York (go USA!) Running Food works directly with fifth generation chia farmers in Bolivia. Running Food is completely traceable from the farmers fields, to their customers hands.  No junk or mystery food!

- They love mother earth.  Packaging is environmentally friendly, and they use 100% renewable energy sources to produce all of their products.

Now, let's go back to confession #1, the whole deal with the Tarahumara and chia.  How can chia help you as a runner?  Let's review.  Actually, let me just cut and paste what Running Food has to say from their website (they say it better than me and the kids are starting to wrestle with the dogs)

Endurance: Protein is essential for sustaining energy during lost distance events. Running Food is loaded with easy to digest proteins. Chia has two times the protein of any other grain or seed, including soy! The way your body digests chia seeds naturally helps you sustain energy. Running Food mixes with water and your stomach juices, forming a gel that creates a barrier between the carbohydrates and your digestive enzymes. Therefore, the carbohydrates digest at a slower even rate, keeping your energy levels constant.
Hyrdation:  Maintaining hydration is key during any endurance event. The way your body digests chia seeds naturally helps you maintain hydration. Running food holds seven times its weight in water, therefore eating chia helps you level out your water intake and retain your electrolyte balance.
Recovery: Protein and antioxidants are crucial for recovery. Running food is packed with both, and it contains the richest source of omega 3's, 6's and 9's of any commercially available source. Plus, the omega fatty acids are plant based. Plant based omegas are easier for your body to absorb than manufactured omegas.

So there you go. Nothing like a sports physiology/nutrition lesson first thing on a Monday morning!

Running Food brand chia offers a number of ways to get your daily chia fix, from whole chia seeds, to micro milled chia, pure chia oil, and even chia oil soft gels (GOOD BYE stinky fish oil supplements!)  So go check them out at www.runningfood.com and tell them Run Faster Mommy sent you !

QUESTION OF THE DAY:  Have you ever tried Chia? Is it a staple in your diet?

Indeed, I love the chia. But the Born To Run folks used a corn mash, not chia seeds to fuel up. and it's mostly about barefoot running. Really great read.

Chia rocks any way you can get it. It is great fuel. Throw it in smoothies, oatmeal, even scrambled eggs and it will still give you a complete super food.

haha guess I really DO need to read the book, huh? ;)

I'm definitely going to try out chia now. You are NOT the only one who hasn't read the book ... nor have I! www.dashingdiva.net

love the book.
LOVE. ALL. THINGS. CHIA. :-)

Never tried it but will definitely check it out. I'm with you on the guilty pleasures and not eating great 100% of the time. Let's just say a jar of Nutella does not last long in this house at all!

What I really need to is to get a new blender and get back to making smoothies so that when I see a delicious-looking dessert or a recipe for decadent cookies, I can just look the other way...

1.) I have not read it either--you're not alone! :)
2.) "A brownie a day, keeps the...."...isn't that how it the saying goes?! Ya--I'll admit my eating isn't the cleanest either!
-And question of the day: no and no.....but would like to try it out now!

Chia is great. Two years ago my doctor suggested my wife and I start using it and so we did. You are right! There is no taste so there is no reason not to eat it.

Ok, you have sold me on this! I have read several articles on it, and yours is the final push that I needed. I haven't read the book either, though it is on my list. I will tell them RFM sent me :)

@ Carolina John That is not true John. They did use Chia Seeds in BTR. While you are correct they did eat pinole (corn mash) they also had iskiate (chia) that Chris and the indians in BTR swear by.

I use it everyday. Love the stuff! I use it in smoothies, oatmeal, my homemade protein balls, and so much more. It's great. GT's Kombucha even makes a couple Chia seed Kombuchas, which I notice really helps with endurance during runs when I drink it before a run.

I feel good about eating chia every day in my cottage cheese, salads, yogurt and sometimes smoothies. I found a great deal on it on Amazon.

I have tried chia...it's not noticable at all when adding it to smoothies, oatmeal, etc. I have to admit that I have let it get shoved to the back of the pantry so maybe it's time to dig it out again :)

I read the book, but I've never had Chia and I don't have those barefoot shoes. It's an interesting book, but I'm not about to go vegan and start fueling with pita and hummus.

I do, however, love Taco Bell. What's your favorite menu item? I'm a fan of the No. 1 combo.

WELL Kelly since you asked ;) It used to be the spicy chicken crunchwrap supreme, but for some ridiculous reason they got rid of it. So I settle for the beef crunchwrap now. It's aiight. ;)

I haven't read ANY running books, if that makes you feel any better.

I love chia! I just started having chia gel before my long runs a little over a month ago. I swear it makes a difference in how I feel during my runs.

I Chia almost everyday and I like it! I have yet to read the book. You are not alone there! :-) I've been buying my chia at the bulk food section of my supermarket. Will check out what Running Food has to offer! Thanks for this post!

I haven't read the book either, but there are certainly enough people out there who have to make me feel like I've read it.

I just started eating it about a month ago after reading Born to Run. I have been eating it in yogurt and applesauce, but haven't tried it yet dissolvedin a liquid - I just don't think I could handle the texture.
I like it, and I am hoping that the longer I eat it, the more I feel its effects.

I tried them about this time last year, they were alright when mixed with a liquid (water, juice, etc.) but when I tried to include them in a stir fry I ended up with debilitating stomach cramps (bent-over in the fetal position cramps). After ensuring it was the seeds and not something else, I gave the rest of them away.

Trying Chia may be a good excuse for me to justify that vitamixer :)

It really is time I got on the chia seed bandwagon. I read and loved Born to Run and was all obsessed with trying them but somehow STILL never have even TRIED them! Is that ridiculous or not?!?!

Great to get the info on chia. I've seen some talk about it, but wasn't sure if it was worth trying.

And it sounds like we follow the same diet :) My kids named our local cupcake bakery "The Mother Ship" because I can't pass it without stopping.

Great blog!

I have just thought about trying Chia, but they had a massive bag at Costco, and I wanted something smaller to start. I will have to check out this kind. I am big on adding flax, which seems to be a lower concentration of nutrients in equal serving size. It also is a bit lower in fat. I know that shouldn't scare me from chia, but it sort of does, since I lOVE fish. I am surprised you lived in Myrtle beach so long w/o loving fish! When we go to OIB, all we eat is fish!
