The resolution bandwagon and a giveaway

Alright, at the risk of a cliche New Years Resolution, here goes nothing:

I need to eat healthier.

Here's the thing though...it's not because I want to lose weight. I'm quite content in that department (despite the fact that I read the other day that the average female runner's body fat percentage is around 12.4%. Is that a joke? I'm pretty sure I'm double that...)

No, I want to eat healthier because I'm sick and tired of the food hangover. You know, waking up first thing in the morning and going "ewwww ugggh I can't believe I ate that strawberry shortcake smothered in whipped topping at 11:30 pm last night " (true story). Or the "ugggh that cheesy quesadilla feels like a brick in my stomach....maybe I'll just sit on the couch for a bit and digest before my worko....zzzzz" (that's me in a food coma). Ughh it's so gross. The holidays got the best of me. I ate the junk, oh it was so good. I became a "holiday weight gain" statistic. I managed to somehow get myself re addicted to the Mountain Dew despite being soda free for MONTHS.

Most importantly, I want to eat healthier because as an athlete, I want to fuel my body in the best possible way. Minus of course, post race celebratory margaritas with my Trakkers Teammies.

Nutrition is most certainly my "do as I say, not as I do" weakness as a soon to be fitness professional. I know without a doubt what is good for me and what is not. I got an A in nutrition. But as you've seen time and time again on this blog, I am a sucker for the high fructose corn syrup and highly refined white carbs.

YUCK.

(is anyone else getting that deja-vu feeling? Ahhh I'm so bad at this eating stuff!)

So it's time to practice what I preach. AGAIN. I don't foresee this blog becoming one of those awesomely crunchy organic foodie blogs (because frankly, I cant' cook) but I'll keep you updated on my progress.

Now, one IMPORTANT aspect of nutrition and athleticism, is proper hydration. I was recently sent this really kick butt water bottle called the "Hydracoach" from sportline. Basically, you tell it how much water you want to drink in a 24 hour period (or, enter your weight and it will pick a number for you) and then it monitors how much water you drink from the bottle. Not only that, it calculates your hourly average consumption. It was designed by a couple of athletes, who found it hard to keep track of their water consumption while hiking ridiculously large mountains, and one fell ill from dehydration at 13000 feet elevation. That's a bummer, no doubt. What hydracoach says about their bottle:

The HydraCoach hydration monitor is a revolutionary interactive fluid measurement device that automatically calculates, monitors and provides instant feedback on fluid consumption for athletes, medical professionals and other health conscious individuals. Determined by a users weight and duration of exercise (sport version), the product will generate a personal hydration goal for the day. The monitor can be further adjusted manually in the setup mode to accommodate other known hydration factors (i.e. intensity of exercise, heat, altitude, pregnancy, etc...) to meet each user's specific hydration needs, or the recommendation of one's coach or other nutrition expert
That's all fancy talk for "DRINK UP!"

Frankly, nothing motivates me quite like numbers (well numbers and race medals, but that's another story), I'm sort of obsessed. So it's almost a little competition with myself to keep drinking water until I hit my 63 oz for the day!

I really did not realize how LITTLE water I drank until I started using the Hydracoach. This is a great tool and I am excited to use it on my epic battle against the evil junk food.

Sportline was awesome enough to provide an extra bottle for me to giveaway to one of my lucky readers! Want a chance to win?

Hydration? I generally suck. That's why I need to win. When I do remember to drink, it's water so there's a bonus.

I changed the way I eat a year ago and no longer feel like you describe. For me, dairy free, lots of veggies, lean protein and whole grains. It works and I feel great. I try to keep healthy options in the house so I'm not tempted to eat a whole bag of Munchos, the most magical of potato chips. Great- now I'm Jonesing. jk. :)

I'm so excited this is great I follow you...anyways, I have to totally remind myself to remember to drink water. It is the one thing I start regretting 10 miles into a run, oh yeah I didn't drink enough water today :(.

Following you, retweeted your post and LOVE that hydracoach bottle! I never get enough water in during the day and end up zonked after runs because I'm so dehydrated. What a wonderful idea to make sure you're getting enough water, be it during your run or sitting at your desk. Love it!

My biggest problem with drinking water is drinking water on the weekends. I drink a crap load of water during the week at work but when the weekends come around, I manage maybe a cup or two. This would really help me keep up with it over the weekend also.

I am excellent at staying hydrated -- when I'm NOT working out. At work I drink glass after glass of water.

But, when I'm working out I HATE drinking anything. My stomach gets all wonky. I need to work on that for sure, because I definitely get dehydrated, and then I need even MORE water.

My biggest hydration weakness is during long races like the 1/2 IM. I always get sloshy. I can't seem to get enough water in me to feel like I'm not completely thirsty then it's too late and I've had too much. Grrrr to hot events.

Holly said...

It is soo hard to have a cup around with a 3.5 year old who wants to drink from a "big girl cup" and a 1.5 year old who just wanted to pull it out of my hand to dump it on herself (don't ask!) I've tried closed top bottles, but they get taken as well!

I find that "knowing" how to cook really good food gets in the way of cooking "good for me" food. I have grown up eating whatever I wanted w/o a single lb catching up until my mid 20's and then the food I am used to eating and cooking is all wrong... That is my struggle with nutrition... OH and soda is the devil! I just know it! =P

My biggest strength is that I drink a ton of water all the time, so in general I'm great! But.....I am so bad about hydrating *during* runs. Afterward I'm great, but I stink about taking water with me or if I do get that far I don't drink much when I'm out. I should have learned my lesson by now-unfortunately I'm still working on that.

OMGoodness girl! You know we're right there on the dew..... In general, I eat junk & don't get my butt moving at an aerobic level, like, ever. So this year, I'm drinking water instead of Dew (we're, what, 6 days in? not a craving yet!) trying to eat more healtful things & at some point getting my butt moving. It's def time I start setting a proper example for my September babies! I may have to look into snagging a nifty bottle like that because I'm a numbers girl & that would be a serious slap in the face of how much water I'm shorting myself everyday!

i tend to be bad about hydrating during the normal week. i'm good about pre-race/post race and run, but not during the day.
and I am bad about not tracking my carb/protein ratio. I need to make sure I eat enough (and the right things) to fuel my body and not worry so much about the weight # on the scale.
