I need to eat healthier.
Here's the thing though...it's not because I want to lose weight. I'm quite content in that department (despite the fact that I read the other day that the average female runner's body fat percentage is around 12.4%. Is that a joke? I'm pretty sure I'm double that...)
No, I want to eat healthier because I'm sick and tired of the food hangover. You know, waking up first thing in the morning and going "ewwww ugggh I can't believe I ate that strawberry shortcake smothered in whipped topping at 11:30 pm last night " (true story). Or the "ugggh that cheesy quesadilla feels like a brick in my stomach....maybe I'll just sit on the couch for a bit and digest before my worko....zzzzz" (that's me in a food coma). Ughh it's so gross. The holidays got the best of me. I ate the junk, oh it was so good. I became a "holiday weight gain" statistic. I managed to somehow get myself re addicted to the Mountain Dew despite being soda free for MONTHS.
Most importantly, I want to eat healthier because as an athlete, I want to fuel my body in the best possible way. Minus of course, post race celebratory margaritas with my Trakkers Teammies.
Nutrition is most certainly my "do as I say, not as I do" weakness as a soon to be fitness professional. I know without a doubt what is good for me and what is not. I got an A in nutrition. But as you've seen time and time again on this blog, I am a sucker for the high fructose corn syrup and highly refined white carbs.
YUCK.
(is anyone else getting that deja-vu feeling? Ahhh I'm so bad at this eating stuff!)
So it's time to practice what I preach. AGAIN. I don't foresee this blog becoming one of those awesomely crunchy organic foodie blogs (because frankly, I cant' cook) but I'll keep you updated on my progress.
Now, one IMPORTANT aspect of nutrition and athleticism, is proper hydration. I was recently sent this really kick butt water bottle called the "Hydracoach" from sportline. Basically, you tell it how much water you want to drink in a 24 hour period (or, enter your weight and it will pick a number for you) and then it monitors how much water you drink from the bottle. Not only that, it calculates your hourly average consumption. It was designed by a couple of athletes, who found it hard to keep track of their water consumption while hiking ridiculously large mountains, and one fell ill from dehydration at 13000 feet elevation. That's a bummer, no doubt. What hydracoach says about their bottle:
The HydraCoach hydration monitor is a revolutionary interactive fluid measurement device that automatically calculates, monitors and provides instant feedback on fluid consumption for athletes, medical professionals and other health conscious individuals. Determined by a users weight and duration of exercise (sport version), the product will generate a personal hydration goal for the day. The monitor can be further adjusted manually in the setup mode to accommodate other known hydration factors (i.e. intensity of exercise, heat, altitude, pregnancy, etc...) to meet each user's specific hydration needs, or the recommendation of one's coach or other nutrition expertThat's all fancy talk for "DRINK UP!"
Frankly, nothing motivates me quite like numbers (well numbers and race medals, but that's another story), I'm sort of obsessed. So it's almost a little competition with myself to keep drinking water until I hit my 63 oz for the day!
I really did not realize how LITTLE water I drank until I started using the Hydracoach. This is a great tool and I am excited to use it on my epic battle against the evil junk food.
Sportline was awesome enough to provide an extra bottle for me to giveaway to one of my lucky readers! Want a chance to win?

Hydration? I generally suck. That's why I need to win. When I do remember to drink, it's water so there's a bonus.
I changed the way I eat a year ago and no longer feel like you describe. For me, dairy free, lots of veggies, lean protein and whole grains. It works and I feel great. I try to keep healthy options in the house so I'm not tempted to eat a whole bag of Munchos, the most magical of potato chips. Great- now I'm Jonesing. jk. :)
Posted this bad boy on my blog.
Sharing via DM, too.
I'm so excited this is great I follow you...anyways, I have to totally remind myself to remember to drink water. It is the one thing I start regretting 10 miles into a run, oh yeah I didn't drink enough water today :(.
Following you, retweeted your post and LOVE that hydracoach bottle! I never get enough water in during the day and end up zonked after runs because I'm so dehydrated. What a wonderful idea to make sure you're getting enough water, be it during your run or sitting at your desk. Love it!
I tweeted :)
My biggest problem with drinking water is drinking water on the weekends. I drink a crap load of water during the week at work but when the weekends come around, I manage maybe a cup or two. This would really help me keep up with it over the weekend also.
I'm a follower and I left ths on my blog.
I'm a follower! I've been reading you via Google Reader for a while, so I didn't realize I wasn't technically "following" you until just now. Whoops.
dailymiled this and facebooked it :)
I am excellent at staying hydrated -- when I'm NOT working out. At work I drink glass after glass of water.
But, when I'm working out I HATE drinking anything. My stomach gets all wonky. I need to work on that for sure, because I definitely get dehydrated, and then I need even MORE water.

I'm a follower. Just shared on Facebook! I am horrible at remembering to drink water. I have no problem remembering to drink wine :)
You know I'm a follower :) My biggest nutritional weakness...hmmm...so many to choose from...probably a toss up between too much processed food and sweets and not enough fruits and veggies, and I'm not so good at the hydration thing either....
Sharing this link now!
I'm a follower. Oh, and my biggest problem with nutrition is getting enough water.
This would beyond cool. I'm a follower
I am horrible at staying hydrated. I always have the best of intentions. I will have a big cup of water on the counter all day...untouched. :-( I am good at staying hydrated DURING a run but terrible BEFORE and AFTER.

My goal is to cut out more HFCS, its expensive but with a diabetic in the house it is needed.
I am addicted to diet coke--mostly because I need caffeine because I do not sleep enough--darn the networks for putting the best shows on from 10-11pm!
I also don't do very good at getting 5 a day. I am a carbohydrate addict--but not the veggie and fruit kind, the bread, potato, rice and pasta kind!
I'm a follower :-)
I follow you
My biggest hydration weakness is during long races like the 1/2 IM. I always get sloshy. I can't seem to get enough water in me to feel like I'm not completely thirsty then it's too late and I've had too much. Grrrr to hot events.
It is soo hard to have a cup around with a 3.5 year old who wants to drink from a "big girl cup" and a 1.5 year old who just wanted to pull it out of my hand to dump it on herself (don't ask!) I've tried closed top bottles, but they get taken as well!
I posted about this on my blog! and than shared that on facebook
I am a follower of you LIVE and in Person and here on your blog =)
I FB"ed about your giveaway =)
I find that "knowing" how to cook really good food gets in the way of cooking "good for me" food. I have grown up eating whatever I wanted w/o a single lb catching up until my mid 20's and then the food I am used to eating and cooking is all wrong... That is my struggle with nutrition... OH and soda is the devil! I just know it! =P
I need to apologize, I wasn't a follower (although I am on Facebook...), but thought I was. So now I am for reals.
Linking your giveaway on my sidebar...
Very cool! I'm a follower! :)
My biggest strength is that I drink a ton of water all the time, so in general I'm great! But.....I am so bad about hydrating *during* runs. Afterward I'm great, but I stink about taking water with me or if I do get that far I don't drink much when I'm out. I should have learned my lesson by now-unfortunately I'm still working on that.
Minus the margaritas, of course.
OMG. I NEEEEEEEED that.
I am a follower (but not a good commenter).
I just forget to drink. Even if it's sitting on my desk.
I am a follower and I so need help drinking enough water. I'm big on just grabbing a cup of coffee or diet soda and forgetting the water. I also am a junk food junkie and need to improve my diet :)
Wow, that is very cool. I definitely need something like that. My weakness is after a good run, I feel starved and want to eat anything I can get my hands on. Have to be very disciplined and go for the fruit though.
i follow :)
i suck at hydration... i'm not into fitness (working on that) but i'm nursing and pumping so i need to be drinking lots but sometimes i just forget

Biggest weakness~ Not drinking enough water!
I follow via GFC.
Oh wow, this would help me SO MUCH! I am doing the Game On! Diet and I need to drink 5 water bottles every day to not loose 10 points each day! My weakness is definitely getting in my water requirement on days that I don't work out heavily. During a workout, I'm cool, I can down 2 or 3 bottles. But on other days, I hardly get 3 in the whole day!

I am doing Weight Watchers right now, and it's REALLY hard to get 6 liquids per day! This would definitely help.
And I retweeted your contest.

My nutritional weekness is candy. Yum. If I cut out candy I know I'd lose all my extra pounds no problem. But I love it so much....
I'm a follower and I definitely want this!
I follow you!
Reading your blog entry was like I wrote it myself. I know TONS about nutrition, but not eating that candy/dessert/sweet is impossible for me. I can resist chips/fat all day long, but put some chocolate in the house and there's no way I won't eat it!
I am great at drinking during the week (when I'm at my desk), but I'm HORRIBLE on the weekends. This would be great!
Wahooo, I am a follower. I need to eat healthier, this year I am trying to eat more less sweets and so far that is going well except I seemed to have replaced that habbit with chips (another weekness of mine). Putting you on my FB now. Enter me, oh hope I win this one. Oh and the Average BF of a runner are you kidding me, there is no way. Either that or I am the biggest darn runner out there. What the heck.
OMGoodness girl! You know we're right there on the dew..... In general, I eat junk & don't get my butt moving at an aerobic level, like, ever. So this year, I'm drinking water instead of Dew (we're, what, 6 days in? not a craving yet!) trying to eat more healtful things & at some point getting my butt moving. It's def time I start setting a proper example for my September babies! I may have to look into snagging a nifty bottle like that because I'm a numbers girl & that would be a serious slap in the face of how much water I'm shorting myself everyday!
well you already know I am a follower :)
Each day I have good intentions of getting in an adequate amount but I usually fail in this daily quest. Something I have to work on for sure!

I g totally get what you mean about the food hang-over. 'Why does my mouth feel like a dust-bowl this morning? Could it have been the packet of chips I ate last night?' I too know what to eat - just sometimes the urge to eat badly overcomes my good resolve.
i was just going to write a post about how i think cars need to have some sort of faucet function so you can drink water in cars b/c i wind up forgetting my water bottle and not drinking, then i drink a ton at night and have to wake up and pee all night

On the whole I think I'm pretty good about staying hydrated. I drink water a lot throughout the day. However,I probably don't take in as much as I should during long runs.

I struggle with hydration too. Two days ago I got into bed and as I was thinking back, I'm pretty sure all I had that day was a travel mug of coffee and 1 glass of water. Bad Bad Bad.
Oh yeah, and brownies.
Posted on Facebook.
I'm so good about drinking water while at work - it's a great excuse to get up out of my chair. But at home I do not drink nearly enough. A new high tech water bottle would definitely encourage me to drink more!

I really stink at healthy eating. I'm not a junk food junkie, but I don't eat lots of fruits and veggies. ANd... I have 3 Pepsi's a day, not diet either.
my biggest concern is the amount of sugar i consume daily. i have tried to cut back...but i am a hopeless sugar addict! i am trying to drink lots of water and have managed to cut diet drinks out of my diet entirely (used to drink 4+ cans/day)
I follow you!! That thing is so cool!

Ugh...I suck at hydration! My husband seems to think I am always in a constant state of dehydration and he might be right! I drink like a bird and I've tried to drink more, but it's just hard. I definitely need to get better at it!
That is one fancy water bottle! I do good with water in spurts. I will do great for a while then fall off the wagon. It is definitely a roller coaster of hydration.
Happy New Year girlie. I'm with you on eating healthier. I'm trying it again for the 7th trillion time. I'm tired of slipping into a coma after every meal, but really, food is so good, how can one resist some[all]times. Go for glory girl, you already get an A for effort.
and that water bottle, holy amazing technology! I am soooooooooo in for this giveaway

my biggest problem is drinking enough in general. I have vasovagal syncope so I pass out and dehydrate easily. Sounds like a good product
I'm a follower and I suck at eating right sometimes...give me my bread and some soda! It totally doesn't do me any good...and keeps this belly fat that just wont gooo away!
I am a follower! This is awesome!
very very cool! My dieting weakness has always been cookies. I always cave.
I'm following you and tweeted!! This water bottle is awesome!! Never seen anything like it. My biggest downfall other than hydration (and I get migraines to kindly remind me I haven't drunk enough) is getting my fruits and veggies. I've started taking an apple to work in my lunch everyday - it's a start at least.
I want this bottle!! My biggest challenge is water and counting calories.
i'm a follower of your blog!
right now my biggest weakness is hydration
I follow.
I do not even come close to drinking enough water daily. I must, I must improve.
And here I thought high fructose corn syrup, Tostitos (Lime Flavored ones), and Buffalo wings were essential items in an endurance person's diet.
ACK!
The water bottle looks really cool. It needs to shout at me, though, to get me to drink more. I totally don't drink enough.

I struggle to eat enough protein. And I have a sweet tooth. Major sweet tooth. I can control it for a while, but then it comes back with a vengeance.
MY biggest weakness?
chips. any kind of chip. potato. corn. veggie. fried. baked. popped.
I could eat salt & veingar chips until I have chemical burns in my mouth.
It's my crack and the one thing I have a hard time saying no to
Strength? planning the meals ans sticking to it. Unless there is a bg of chips in the house.

follower :) Holy cow my mom would love this!
Water is one of my weaknesses (unless it's a SOBE lean--I can make 3 trips to the potty in an hour because of those delicious water enhanced beverages). Mainly, as a teacher with a small bladder, it's hard to drink as much as I should. I can't just leave the classroom when I feel the urge. I'm trying to work on drinking more in the a.m. before school even starts to get some of that sweet, sweet water in me.
Followed today. woo hoo.
Ok... my weakness really and truely is drinking enough water. I suck at it. BUT what I've been doing lately is adding frozen lemon and blackberries to my water and it makes it taste super yummy and it keeps it cold.

I posted this on my fb!! YAY!
I follow.
The good parts of my nutrition is, that I LOVE basically every fruit and veggie out there.
The bad part is, that I am too lazy (and unskilled) to cook and prepare healthty lunches for work. So most of the time I am eating out over lunch.
I put this on the sidebar of my blog.
I was doing so well before the holidays...but my weakness is anything sweet. Christmas cookies were the staple of my diet for December. Yay for re-dedicating ourselves to nutrition!
Hey, I'm a follower,,
My bigges weakness is Chocolate!!! MMmm its soo good!
One thing that saves me is my love of fruit and veggies!

Biggest strength: I drink lots of water
Biggest Weakness: sugar and salt cravings.

my biggest weakness is i love to bake, but i have been better and eating smaller portions and trying to bake less often and cook healthy meals for my family and my self. love picking fresh fruit and having our own garden.
if i win this awesome water bottle i will be giving it to a great friend that just found out she is pregnant with twins. she has always been a soda drinker and is trying to drink more water for the health of her little unborn babies.
My hydration strength: M-F at work my goal is to drink two 32oz cups of water - one before lunch, one after lunch.
My hydration weakness: I do not have this cup at home on the weekend!!!
I will share on FB...and on my blog...and now I follow you!

I dont do super well in the hydration dept, but I am UBER bad in the nutrition dept! Being a stay at home mom, I can just munch munch munch all day-MAJOR weakness!

I'm actually pretty good in the hydration department. What isn't good? My bladder. Any run longer than an hour and a half and I have to make a pit stop. Ridiculous.
That water bottle looks amazing!!!
I'm so bad with my hydrating! At work I drink about 4 glasses of water then head to the gym, sweat it out and try to force myself to drink 2 more :(
I just hate not knowing how much I'm drinking exactly so the above is really a guestimate

Well hello there!
I have been a fan of your for a couple months now but this little contest has got me commiting, lol!
Hydration is something I am good at at work if I am looking at my water bottle, right now I am at home with my babes and have only had maybe a glas and a half so far today. Minus the double coffee : ) LOVE! LOVE this waterbottle, AMAZING, I would have one for my whole family! Very cool, both the waterbottle & your blog. Thanks!!! Run Mummy Run!!!
I'm a follower! Love moms that run!
Love water, never hydrate enough. Figuring out the nutrition side of running is the hardest thing for me. What works- what doesn't.
I'm a follower, natch...:)
Water is definitely one of my weaker points. I'm really good, though, about eating real food and getting lots of fruits and veggies.
About 6 months ago, I ended up in the emergency room with kidney stones :( It was a rude wake up call to me that I NEEDED to drink a lot more water. To be honest, I only drank water during and after exercise. My drink of choice was Diet Coke. I was told to drink at least 80 ounces of water a day. Are you kidding me?! It was and still is so so hard to do. I still choose Diet Coke sometimes over water, but I am much more aware of my water intake now! This would be so awesome! I had never heard or seen anything like it! VERY cool! Thanks for sharing!

My biggest nutrition issue is probably eating too much of stuff that you shouldn't eat too much of. Like Peanut Butter. I will eat it straight from the jar and eat way tooo much.
Are we really supposed to comment a gazillion times for all the things we did? OK. I just stumbled over here from Dangle the Carrot and started following...
AND I blogged about it...
AND I became the queen of refined carb consumption over the holidays, just like you! Generally I'm ok with sweets, but white flour... pasta... bread... whatever... I love it. Need to quit that. Oh, and drink more!

i tend to be bad about hydrating during the normal week. i'm good about pre-race/post race and run, but not during the day.
and I am bad about not tracking my carb/protein ratio. I need to make sure I eat enough (and the right things) to fuel my body and not worry so much about the weight # on the scale.
