300+ followers. Wow. When I started this blog, less than a year ago, I wouldn't have believed it if I was told that thirty people wanted to read and follow my ramblings, never mind three hundred of you. If I could have motivated just one person with all of my "blah blah blah"ing about running, I would have been satisfied. But the comments and emails from all of you, well it's just overwhelming (in a good way!) Just so you know, you all motivate ME. I love reading your comments, posts, and stories as well. I apologize that I can't keep up with ALL of you as frequently (darn homework and such gets in the way of my blogging, haha), but know that I appreciate every single one of you. THANK YOU!
Now, back to my rambling.
I would like to publicly state, for the record, that the marathon training plan is written on crayola PAPER, but not in crayola crayon. Not to say that I wouldn't do it, but fitting all of that speed work in a tiny square is kind of hard with the not so fine point of a crayon.
But I'm glad the non crayon training plan doesn't start for a few more weeks, because my foot still hurts. One of the benefits of having a blog is that I can search the old posts to see just how long I've been whining about my ailments. We are coming up on one full month. It started right around the time I started running in the Newtons, and I can't help but wonder if they are partially to blame. Because the pain is located directly over these "actuator lugs" on the shoes. I have broken them in as I was instructed to, starting with short runs, and alternating with my old shoes. I really love the Newtons. But I think I might just have to put them aside for a few weeks to determine if they are, indeed, the culprit.
According to my self diagnosis, my sesamoid bones are the source of the pain (hey, I'm a poor college student, a elective MRI when I'm having no trouble walking around is probably going to cost me an arm and, well, my good leg.) And according to everything I've googled (I know, incredibly reliable information) sesamoid pain is a common overuse injury in...you guessed it...distance runners.
So, much to my chagrin, I'm taking a week off from running. Maybe two. I'm very excited about this. So thrilled, really, that I spent the entirety of yesterday moping around like I had just lost my favorite pet. Uggh. But I'd hate to start what is planned to be a kick butt running year with a stress fracture, so better safe than sorry, I guess. Can you hear the dissapointment in my voice (or, i guess, fingers?)?
Thankfully, Monday I meet with the pool director to schedule my swimming lessons. No better way to dive into triathlon training than being forced into the pool! It is meant to be I tell ya! But in the meantime, I'd love to hear any suggestions from you seasoned pro's. This is my first ever "almost" running injury, and I'd like to make sure it doesn't get past the "almost" stage.
Happy running my friends. Run a few miles for me, will ya?

You will be fine and make up the miles easy..
So have you seen the lady sing the song "I dont want to go slow I go fast..." and on, I love that song... Am totally trying to find it online so I can post it for the non parents out there..
I watched far too much Nick Jr. for my own good Christmas break "There's a party in my tummy, so yummy, so yummy."
wow 300!! Congrats!
I'm sorry that you're having pain in your foot. An injury is never fun! I've never had the pain you're describing, but I have had my share of foot injuries from running and I think you're smart to lay low for awhile. The last thing you want to do is run through it and end up creating a bigger problem...like a stress fracture like you mentioned. I hope it gets better soon!
I owe you several months of miles!
We do not have Nick Jr -- just the equally annoying Treehouse.
Then when your kids figure out how to turn on the computer (if they haven't already) you can have Nick Jr. all the time! I still haven't decided if that's a good thing or not. I told the kid he could be on the internet if it's somewhat "educational."
Is the sesamoid area where you get bone spurs? I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV. I'm just guessing. I hope you figure it out.
Taking a break is the best idea. Ice and Advil also usually are good ideas. Have fun at the pool. Lessons really are worth the investment.
I feel your pain. I had to take a week off a couple of months ago and I was not happy - neither was my husband orany of the kids. Look forward to when you can run pain-free again and do whatever you can to keep your sanity. Good Luck!
Ugh foot injuries!! I can't in good conscience leave your blog without asking, have you read Born to Run? If not I so very much recommend it. It may just answer your questions about your foot pain!
Congrats on reaching 300!!
Congrats on all the great followers! (Being one of them, I know they are Great!)
We still watch that channel...it used to be Noggin. I liked N.O.G.G.I.N...Noggin! At least they only slightly changed the format. And thank goodness Moose and Zee are still around!
I hope the foot greats better with a bit of rest!
You are doing the right thing! Take the time off now so you don't have to take more time off later. I hope the week off serves you well :-)
Ugh I hope it's not the Newtons...
You are smart to take a break and hit the pool.
Congrats on 300!
Gotta love Yo Gabba Gabba! And good positive energy for your recovery from injury. Don't forget the ol' R.I.C.E. method.
And @Mel: The Laurie Berkner Band album "Rocketship Run" has the song you're looking for. It's called "Fast and Slow". Great song!
Heather,
I have had more than my share of injuries. The only foot injury I have had was a stress fracture that occurred 3 weeks before I was supposed to run in the Marine Corp Marathon. Best to honor your pain and back off. You don't want to end up like me :)
Good luck with the swimming. I am a horrible swimmer. The swim gene must have skipped me. My dad was a swimmer and my daughter swam competitively for 10 years.
I am proud to be one of your 300 followers. That is totally amazing...
Hope you get back on your feet soon!!!
I'm a firm believer in backing off at the first hint of pain. Pain is your body's way of warning you and if you don't listen, it'll scream at you in the form of a longer term serious injury. I've learned that the hard way, but following my own advice I've managed to stay injury free for years now! :)
I've also recently started running in the Newtons. I did a couple of very short runs in them (like 2 miles two times) and then jumped into a 7 miler... was worried that maybe that was too big of a jump, but it appears that I adjusted just fine- I'm now doing all of my running in them and I've run about 31 miles in the this week. Haven't noticed any magic in them yet, but I'm not really fit enough to start pushing hard yet so I'm still trying.
rest is a good thing when injuries are involved.
perfect timing to get going in the pool. perfect.
Definitely smart to rest, try to enjoy the time off from running and know how much you'll enjoy getting back into it without the foot pain. Congrats on all the followers, that's awesome!
Go swimming:) And I know!, aren't the Splish suits too dang cute?!!! As far as 100% poly vs. poly/spandex, I think the 100% is more expensive. I have the poly/spandex blend I'm pretty sure. And w/sizing, they should have a sizing chart, but yeah I had to exchange mine.
Let us know how the swimming goes, and if you get a suit!;)
I think you are very wise to take some time off now before it gets worse. And yay you get to do your tri training. I think it is amazing all of the people you are reaching with your blog. Keep up the awesome work and I will get you some miles next week don't you worry. :)
I sympathize ! I struggle with unpredictable frequent pain of bunions ! Hope it heals quickly !
Tammy
wow 300 followers! congrats :)
i like to self-diagnose too... cheaper, and docs usually don't know what to say either other than "maybe you shouldn't run so much". not my idea of a diagnosis! hope your foot feels better soon!!
Sorry to hear about the sesamoid. I'm certain you'll be all healed up and back on the asphalt in no time ... in the meantime, happy swimming!
hello Heather...first time blogger! I had to comment about your Newton shoes....funny thing is, I am a big supporter of them, but don't run in them? How does that work? Well, my wife lives her running life in them...and I ran with them for a bit - their shoes are designed for a specific running form, and to help you get there - be careful with them! It's almost like they take practice....I gave them up because I already strike mid to fore-foot and they actually made my hip feel weird (I liked them, but just didn't need the strike point....).
So...yes, I think the shoes could be hurting you...but I also think building foot-strength helps..(I use not-support shoes on the treadmill to start out...). Anyway, enough of my opinion...I just had to shout out for Newton - I love their shoes so much that I think I'm going to try them again this season (weird, huh?).
oh yeah, btw, I am Goals for the Week husband.....love your blog!
Congrats on 300 followers! I'm one of the new ones and look forward to reading more. Really inspiring stuff! :) Hope your foot feels better soon.
Winks & Smiles,
Wifey
