I'd take my hat off to you, but my ears are cold

I can hear Bethany telling me to quit whining before I even say it, but it's COLD here!! Apparently years back I hopped off I-95 a little too soon when migrating South from the arctic tundra that is the state of Vermont. Because lately it's been colder here than I bargained for. The poor palm trees are probably freezing their palm fronds off as we have woken up to another morning barely hovering at twenty degrees.

I know, I know, 20 F is a heat wave to you Northern folk, but you know this is not the local norm when the following weather statement was issued for our county:
...If venturing outside... wear several layers of clothing. Keep your
head... hands and feet covered to prevent heat loss. School children
should not be exposed to the cold for a prolonged period of time.

Common sense to most, yes, but in the land of year round rainbow flip flops and Jimmy Buffett, we don't know what to do with ourselves!

Really, I don't know how you Northerners do it. You'd think I would, after the 20 years I spent in the tundra, but apparently I've suppressed those cold weather memories. Because after one week of this nonsense I'm going stir crazy. The kids are going stir crazy. I promise not to complain this summer, when I have to get my long runs in at 5:00 am, when it's already 105 degrees with 99% humidity. Ahhh, my toes are thawing just thinking of it!

On a positive note, I have learned that my Sugoi Race + Recovery socks double as lower leg warmers when just lounging around the house, haha.

So, hat's off to you, cold weather runners. ( Metaphorically speaking, of course, I'm not taking anything off in this weather. ) You are MUCH stronger than I. As for me...I'm off to find another treadmill!

Happy (warm) running to you!

I feel you, after this winter I will never complain about the heat in the summer again. I prefer running in the summer in Houston than running in the winter in Oklahoma and it's not nearly as cold here as places farther north. I don't know how those northerners do it.
I'm treadmilling it today too.

Okay...so 20 is definitely cold!! Even for a northern girl.

I'd say you are just as strong for being able to run in the heat...I would much rather run in the cold than the heat and humidity!!

Hillarious! I have become soft since moving from MI. Hopefully this will pass soon.

I'm with you - this cold weather can go find another home! It's supposed to snow AGAIN tonight! Hello, Arkansas doesn't ever see snow. Like, ever. This sucks and I hate it. Bring on the heat!

Had to jump on the Run Fast Mommy bandwagon and I am so glad I did! Your posts are great!
And I am with you, I was whining last night on my run because it was 49 degrees out - I have no shame in admitting I am a huge baby when it comes to the cold! Stay warm my friend! :)

Haha! Running in the cold is purely out of necessity for me. I complain all winter long and always tell my husband, "You won't hear me complain once about how hot it is this summer. Not once!" And I don't!

At least it will be warming up there much sooner than if you were still living up north.

Happy treadmill running!

You're so right! I'm in Hotlanta and it's not very hot. Running outside has been interesting to say the least. I'm on a treadmill hunt myself!

Haha...seriously, if I didn't HAVE to run in this cold weather, I wouldn't! I'm super jealous of your weather!!

omg, i hear you. out here in cali- and it's FREEZINg (according to my standards) this am. But I'm gonna suck it up and do my compu trainer bike out in my freezing studio and attempt to run after...will I do it???;)

Don't let us northern runners trick you... secrets out: we're not really running outside either!!! Lol

Seriously, yesterday it was 10 degrees out but sunny so I thought I could take it. I made it about a mile, where I conveniently found myself in front of my gym and went inside to finish my workout. It was supposed to be a 7 mile run! Oh well... Enjoy the warmth!!!

I must be the odd one out. Although I am nervous, I'm a little excited to be doing my marathon training during a CO winter. I seem to run longer in cold weather. Maybe its because I don't have any feeling. Or maybe its because I feel like an absolute badass! Either way, I am pumped about all my Under Armour ColdGear and love to get out there! But yes...I'm the odd one...so keep it up inside for you. I would die in the heat..that is for sure!

i am truly shocked at the amount of runners i see outside in this NJ freezing cold ass weather, give me a treadmill any day over this cold.

I am in Greenville, SC so I understand your pain! I do not know how the northeners do it either! Seriously, it has been a lot colder this year! It does not help my motivation to get out there and run!

Julia said...

I don't know how the northerners manage to run, either! Anything in the 40s and I'm rushing off to get my scarf and mittens! And how on earth does one run in snow???

I'm in Orlando and this morning it was 28 degrees with a 21 degree windchill... I ran in the gym!

No doubt running in the cold is a balancing act -- you have the find the right amount of layers for that day so you aren't too cold and you aren't too hot. This is my first winter running outside, so I have a ton to learn!

Heather,

I have great admiration for anyone that can run in the heat and humidity. Cold weather you can layer and after the 1st mile, no matter how cold it is you warm up.

I wouldn't trade my winter conditions for your summer.

I start to suffer when it gets above 55.

Happy Treadmill running!

Just came across your blog (which I'm thoroughly enjoying!!).

20F is DARN cold! This coming from a Canadian - hahaha. Though I'm on the west coast and 20F is COLD here. We're at about 40F right now and I'm cold. About the coldest I'll run outside is maybe 28-30F, and only if it's not a damp cold (which is typical here).

Now the heat though is a different matter. That you will hear me whining about having to run in. I melt when it gets too warm out.

I love running in the cold!! my coldest so far is only -3C tho so... well that's not really that cold...

My last two runs have been on the dread mill, too.

I totally agree...20 degrees is cold! I live in CO so I'm no stranger to the cold, but I am a total wuss in cold weather too! Luckily, my husband and I bought a treadmill this fall so I've been getting my runs in on that!
We went to AZ for a week for xmas and it was in the mid 60s. My mom thought it was cold and actually made fires in the fireplace..ha ha. The best was when my husband and I got to go out for runs...in our shorts and t-shirts! :)

I don't mind the cold...I actually find running in the cold exhilerating...but the wind that is hitting Baltimore right now it awful! I was literally crying during my entire run yesterday because the wind was blowing in my eyes so hard. boo.

Same here! It's not as low as 20, but it was 34 this morning, and it may as well have bene the end of the world in terms of weather reporting.

I hate the cold (I live in CT), but hate the "dreadmill" even more! So I suck it up and run outside. This past weekend I had my "Ultimate Running Challenge" where I ran outside in the snow with a windchill near zero. I'm counting down the days until March 20th, believe me!

I've lived near Boston all my life and really, really could do without the cold (just need to convince rest of fam and extended fam to move south!). Have already been on a few runs this winter in single-digit temps and just keep telling myself it's worth it so I'll be in shape to enjoy the spring and summer. You're right--thinking about running in the sweltering sun does help you feel warmer!

Teamarcia said...

I will take the cold and snow, even some black ice, over sweltering, oppressive heat anyday.
But wow! 20 is COLD for you down there!

Mama said...

I'd normally take the cold over hot, but this wind just has to stop. I can handle freezing cold, but the gusts that push you every which way and come through the slightly damp clothes just suck.

There are many many days I wish I had a treadmill. And running in heat is awful -- I'd run in the cost any day.

PS -- I gave you a shoutout on my blog plus included you in my Twitter/FB updates to hopefully push that raffle past the $1K mark!

I know!! It finally made it to 30 degrees here yesterday at 2pm. The first time all week it has been above 30. Stay warm!

Amanda said...

Oh my gosh, this cold is terrible! All my flowers died, the dogs water bowl wont thaw and I don't even want to step out of my house. It needs to warm up ASAP!!

great blog!! :)
And thanks for the kudos! It was 22 degrees out this morning in my neck of the woods of New Hampshire and I was pysched to run outside because it was "warmer" than usual!

shellyrm said...

This has been a very cold winter so far! I usually don't have too many days that I can't get out. Layer, layer, layer.

I know it will ease up before long. Hopefully, the 30s are in sight again soon.

I am one of those Northerners who has to deal with frigid temps but I really think you guys with the 105 degree summer temps have it worse though. I HATE heat even more than cold! I love how school children should not be exposed to the cold for a prolonged period of time(20 degrees is sweatshirt weather here)!! Someone should pass that on to our school kids because they are stuck out there for 2 recesses when it is well below zero! Enjoy the treadmill-it has become a good friend of mine as well!!

I thought I was hardcore back in the day being able to run in the Buffalo cold. However now, I cringe when it is 30 out.

joyRuN said...

I'll take 20F over heat & humidity anytime! It's tough to get going, but I warm up quick. When I run in the heat though, I just wither a slow death out there. BLECH!
