It's a horrible tease, let me tell you. Like taking a caffeine addict into Starbucks, but telling them they can only have water. Or a shopping addict to the mall, but telling them they have to stay in the food court. That is how these past 11 days of not running have felt for me here on the internet. Everywhere I turn, the fact that I'm not running was rubbed into my face. On dailymile I watched my name get closer and closer to the bottom of all of the challenges. On facebook I read of people registering for new races, or trying new shoes. Don't even think I read any of your blog posts. I childishly avoided them at all costs out of pure jealousy. Please don't disown me for my selfishness. But in light of the horrible disaster that struck Haiti this week, I felt like a big a-hole (for lack of better terms) for coming on here and whining and crying over my injury that keeps me from running. Boo hoo to me, at least I have a roof over my head and clean water, among countless other blessings. It made my problems seem so petty and trivial. So instead, I just avoided all of you. That's how I roll, I guess.
I've never had a running injury. Well, I take that back...there was the week after my very first half marathon where I walked backwards down the flight of stairs at my apartment every morning, and painfully eyed them like they were Mt. Everest when I had to climb back up. But that was more of a "hey stupid, signing up for a half marathon when you didn't train, nor run period was a lame idea" sort of injury. Not an actual running injury. I've considered myself very lucky for not having experienced anything, short of a 20 week fetus, that has sidelined me from running for a significant amount of time.
Alas, the foot pain was only getting worse, so I dutifully took eleven full days off from running. Eleven looong days apart from my addiction, and I tried to whine as minimally as possible. Although, truth be told, when Rich brought up the lack of running at our twice yearly happy hour on Friday, I nearly shed a few tears. I blame the $2.99 margaritas. Both of them.
This morning, I woke up and noticed baby Kain's hair had gone back to tight pin curls from it's straight recent state. Kain's hair is our personal barometer, so my first thought was to check out the weather channel. 69 degrees and sunny. BEAUTIFUL! After the recent stretch of freezing weather, there was no way I could pass up this opportunity to go for a run. And then, as if the running gods were sending me a sign, Rich (who hasn't run in years) said out of the blue "I think I want to go for a little jog today" . Let me tell you I ran around this house like a whirlwind throwing on running clothes and tossing toddlers into the jog stroller before he could even contemplate changing his mind.
We were going for a run.
And he did so well. We ran/walked /mostly ran for 2 miles, all while Rowen gave a running commentary of mailbox colors and kept count of squirrel sightings. Rich apologized numerous times that we had to go so slow and keep taking walk breaks. I assured him that I would skip the entire 2 miles, I was so flipping happy to be out there! When we returned home, Rich told me he'd watch the boys if I wanted to get in a few more miles on my own. I wanted to, more than I could ever express, but I didn't . Because I had just run 2 miles, and my foot...it didn't hurt. I don't want to push a good thing.
I hope it's not too soon to say this ...and I promise to take it slow and easy...but...I think I'm back!
Happy running my friends, hoping I will be joining you this week!

and as I mentioned, my heart and prayers go out to all of the victims of the horrible earthquake in Haiti. Some blog friends are doing their part to help...
Krystyn, at "Really, are you Serious?" is donating $1 for each person who comments to the relief efforts, and her Mom will match contributions
Ross, at Run 26.2 for Kelly is donating $2 per comment to the relief efforts , and his company will match contributions
Lastly, you can donate $10 to the relief efforts through the Amercian Red Cross, to be charged to your cell phone bill by texting "HAITI" to "90999" This can be verified on the official White House website (it's not just some random number I'm throwing out there, I promise!) I donated through text and it was very simple.

Cool idea to see that bloggers are donating on behalf of comments. thx
Yay! I'm glad you were able to get back out there AND that your foot felt good. Happy dance!
Great news about the run. Doesn't it feel like you've been let out of jail AND you were able to collect $200 (Bad Monopoly analogy) Hope your recovery goes well.
Glad to see you back.
Hi there, i've been following your blog for a while but haven't commented much. Today I jsut ran my first marathon in houston, which was HARD!! But I did it. Do you have any recovery tips for me? Thanks for the inspiration as a mom/runner.
Do you think your injury was due to too much running in the Newtons? I tweeked my calf muscle pretty badly on Thursday (enough to force me to hitch a ride home the last 3 miles) and am pretty sure that it was too much Newton running. DARN. I really wanted to like those thing but now I'm scared of them.
Heather,
Glad you had a pain free run!
That is great news :)
Mike and Emily: CONGRATULATIONS on an awesome accomplishment! Recovery tips....rest...but keep moving! The best recovery I've ever had after a marathon was after the Disney World marathon, and I totally think that was because I walked the parks for the next two days! Take it easy, but if you feel the urge to stretch your legs out for an easy mile or two, by all means do so! Stretch, massage if at all possible, and most importantly eat well and hydrate! All if it will aid in your recovery. Congrats again! :)
Here's to hoping for a pain free running week :-)
Mama Simmons: I hate to say it, but yes. I think the Newtons sort of threw me too far forward in my strike. I eased my way into them like recommended, but I don't know. The pain is RIGHT where the actuator lugs are. I don't want to write them off yet, especially because I was SO excited, just like you said! But for the moment, the Newtons are taking a leave of absense until I feel 100% again!
Glad you were able to get out and enjoy the day ;) I'm assuming Rich is your husband? Very good that he would go out with you!!
Hi Heather,
Good job on getting out on a run!
Thanks for the wonderful suggestion to donate by text...I will do it shortly! Keep smiling:)
You're welcome for the song! Sorry to hear you haven't been able to run...I've been like you, fairly lucky to have avoided a major running injury. But I have friends who haven't been so lucky, so I know it's totally miserable. I hope you're healed up for good now!
And yeah - sometimes it takes a disaster like Haiti for us to remember just how lucky we are. :)
Glad you're back... I know how that feels. Not to make light of the earthquake... but I read somewhere after 9-11, that your problems are important to you, despite what is going on around you. They are your problems and the ones affecting YOUR life at THAT time. Whine all you want, because it's what YOU have to live with. Not a very good synopsis of the article, but I hope you know what i"m getting at.
Yay! Glad you're feeling better and ready to get out there. And, you'll feel better about yourself when you see my mileage on dailymile. I just added you. :)
Ohh, I hope you are back and doing well. I've just come out of an injury and it was IMPOSSIBLY hard! You did it girl and I love the fact that your baby's hair is your barometer! Take it easy...
Glad you were able to run pain-free!
Glad your foot cooperated! I'm jealous of those temps though. It's supposed to be mid 50s and sunny tomorrow and I'll be running even though it's supposed to be a rest day.
MCM Mama
$2.99 margaritas? And you only had two?!
I totally understand how it feels to read blogs about other people's running experiences... but not being able to run. I've been there too many times and have decreased my blog reading during those times. You're not an A-hole... you're normal. Then again, maybe we're both A-holes. lol
I'm glad you could get out there and that your foot felt good. I hope that continues!!
Glad you were able to get out there! Hope your foot is better!
Glad the foot is doing better.
Nice run! I also donated through the Red Cross and it worked really nicely.
Set backs from injuiries are just soooo very cruel. Not that this helps but just knwo you aren't alone: A dear friend of mine is a sub 3-hour marathoner and has not been able to run in 14 weeks due to bursitis in her leg (or something like that!). You're going at it the smart way...soon you'll be right back in the mix! Yea for your husband getting out there, too! Have a great week!!
Heather - such great news! Just be really careful this week, get back at it slowly and before you know it all that frustration will be in the past.
I actually caught myself eyes skyward this Sunday after my 11-miles with no shin pain thanking everyone and anyone for letting me get back to what I love to do.
Best of luck - take care,
Joe
thanks for the tips. I'm moving as much as I can but I am SORE. =) Lots of water and oranges and epsom salt baths this week too. Thanks for the encouragement.
Emily
Hooray! I'm so glad you had a good run that was pain free. It really sucks to be injured!
Great suggestions for ways to donate to the Haiti fund. Whole Foods has also paired with the Red Cross to collect money as well. I was able to get some groceries and donate to the Haiti in one trip!
So nice that you had a running buddy. My hubby apologizes for being slow too.
Love that the curls help you determine the weather.
Glad you are back; and wise at that! Taking it easy after a layoff is the way to make it stick. Happy trails!
I'm glad your foot is starting to feel better, but you aren't overdoing it. It is hard to not feel bad about anything these days. Going to the grocery store...playing with your kids. It's awful.
Thanks for linking! I hope I can get up to $200!
I totally understand the addiction! I've had IT band issues and last year, I walked home from one (what was supposed to be a) run and just bawled. We love what we love, I guess!
Anyway, I'm stoked for ya!
yay! Glad you got a run in. It's so fun when the whole fam can go (and sometimes when they can't:))
