The Dungeon Run

Call me a chicken, but when it's 25 degrees, I don't want to run outside. Yes, I did it a few weeks ago in New Hampshire. Yes, I realize compared to -25 with the windchill and blizzards most of you are experiencing, 25+ and dry seems like a heat wave. But here's the deal, a) 25 is still 7 degrees below freezing, which is, according to science, FREEZING! and b) I'm in SOUTH CAROLINA! This was not part of this "moving to a warmer climate" deal!

All whining aside, I tried to work my way around this situation. Saturday, I busted out the Jari Love ripped 1000 DVD for a little plyometrics, and a LOT of squats and lunges. Man that chick loves the squats and lunges. Two days later, my hamstrings still hate me (or they hate Jari Love, really, but they are taking it out on me. )

Yesterday, I needed to seek out a treadmill. It was Sunday, the school gym was closed, and the city gyms closed early. I remembered this sports complex that had opened just down the road a little less than a year ago. It was in an old warehouse, and advertised having indoor soccer/baseball/basketball fields, gymnastics, and among a bunch of other stuff, a fitness center. I thought I'd give it a shot.

And that, my friends, is how I wound up here:

The camera lighting is not off. That's how dark it was. But after paying my admission fee all the way on the other end of the building (like half a mile away, or so it felt) I figured I'd best suck it up and get on the treadmill. It wasn't nearly as creepy as it looks, but it was a new experience to say the least. Treadmills are bad to begin with...treadmills with nothing to look at but cement and steel? Well you can imagine the excitement I felt. There wasn't even any "people watching" to be had, I was the lone ranger on this end of the building massive warehouse. But afterall, it was atleast 50 degrees in there.

I squeaked out a little over 4 miles, what felt like the longest 4 miles of my life. And I mean squeaked, that treadmill needs a hit of WD-40. Thank goodness for my ipod, on all counts in this situation. I got my endorphin fix for the day, stretched out the angry hamstrings, and went on my merry way, happier and stronger than I was when I walked in. Thank you for that, squeaky old treadmill in the dingy old warehouse. Thank you running, for making me so happy.

And the awesome adventure that is 2010 is off to a fun start!

Happy Running my friends!

I must agree, that is a scary looking place. Way to go in getting on there. I can handle 25, but once it is below 15 I hit the treadmill.

Hmmm...I don't know, 25 degrees doesn't sound so bad compared with that!! I won't go out under 20, but I live in Syracuse, NY, so if I want to run outside at all in the winter, I have no choice!!

Ipods rock for situations just like that!:)
Also, sort of OT, but i was pretty sick with the stomach flu the past 2 days, and it made me think of all the people out there who have to feel like this ALL THE TIME from chemo treatments. ugh...
I'm going to donate to your cause right now...

Oh my gosh! That looks like #$%^! I have a tough enough time on my basement treadmill, with the TV, the ipod, and whatnot to keep my mind occupied. You go girl!

I hit the treadmill for 3.12miles yesterday and there was a man who breathed SO loudly that people were breaking their necks trying to look. Poor guy.

Anyways, I'm totally with you - if it's less than 50 degrees out - this girl goes inside to run!

I thought my workout room was dark and scary! Brave girl!!

...and with the squeak you wouldn't hear a crazed attacker sneaking up on you. You know, those ones who stalk sweaty treadmill runners.

That place looks creeptastic! I don't blame you for choosing it over freezing weather though! Like you I refuse to run outside if it's below freezing.

holy cow think i would take the 25 over that place. hope the school gym is better. :)

Wow! Creepy warehouse gym! Although, I'll take my treadmill any day over sub freezing temps so I don't blame you for seeking refuge. The other day, the hubby and I ran in the teens and my fingers stayed frozen even with gloves on. Ouch!

By the way, my hubs is from SC. I LOVE it there!

I can't stand the treadmill unless someone is dangling a cookie/brownie/fudge in front of me. Good for you!

25 degrees? I think the coldest I've ever run in was in the 40s and I was miserable!
I have the Jari love DVD but haven't used it yet. You just reminded me to get to it! :)

That is THE sketchiest gym I've ever seen!

You go, girl!!! Way to do that run in those conditions!!! But I know what you mean, I'm here in Alabama and it's freaking cold here, too!

Tough run. Instead of WD-40, bring your can of mace with you next time!

Jess said...

At least you didn't have to abide by the 30 minute rule that most gyms restrict treadmill use to.

How funny, "a squeaky old treadmill!" Those noisy ones drive me crazy! Well, atleast you got to run!

Lisa said...

I'm not fond of running in below freezing weather either. Also not fond of treadmills. sigh.

That DOES look like a dungeon! Yikes! Good for you for getting it done.

Mel-2nd Chances said...

Yikes, not sure if that makes running on a treadmill better or worse! But kudos to you for getting it done! :) Happy New Year by the way, trying to catch up on blogs!

Ooh, creepy, but at least you got it done. I've been really thankful for the treadmill in the basement this week.

Looks like they're doing their bit to save the environment. Now if only they could hook up the equipment to a generator then the faster you ran the brighter it'd get.

Creepy! Er, er, er!

Way to go, o brave soul!

Wow...that doesn't look fun! I'll stop complaining about running on my treadmill in the basement...at least I have a tv to watch!

Dismal! You need to bring something with a little color to brighten the place up if you go back.
