When the stars align...

After school today, I had every intention to run. Rich had to leave for work, so I was going to take the boys out in the jogger.

But first, Rowen H-A-D to have a bowl of cereal, in that "my little toddler life my just end right now if I don't get it" sort of way.

And when he was done, he HAD to have another one. This skinny 3 year old only has a few pounds on his 1 year old brother. He always acts too busy to be bothered to eat, so if he wants seconds, I'm not denying him!

Finally, he's finished. Diaper change for Kain. A trip to the potty for Rowen (no pee on the IronB.O.B. please), and outfit changes for both , because after all, 60 degrees is chilly to us S.C. folks.

And then...the sun started to go down. Fine for a solo run, not safe in my neighborhood with two kids and this beast of a stroller A run just wasn't meant to be today.

But imagine my excitement a few hours later when BOTH kids went to bed by 6:25 pm (let's ignore the fact that this means I will be up at 5:00 am with them tomorrow morning). I eyed the exercise bike in the corner and dragged it out in front of the T.V. Such is the life of a mom, grab the workout wherever you can! I channel flipped for literally two seconds and found the XTERRA triathlon world championships. SCORE! Instant motivation, it was totally meant to be!

I peddled as fast as my legs would let me and discovered three things:

1) I'm totally adding an Xterra race to my "to do" list (you know, after I learn to swim and all).

2) Even on the highest setting the seat on this exercise bike does NOT go high enough for my poor knees, and I'm only 5'7" (that's the same one we have, isn't it cute? LOL! )

3) wow cycling is hard, especially when you only get on a bike a few times a year.

Topped it off with day #1 of the 100 pushup challenge (I'm in the middle group, started with 6,6,4,4,8...all with near perfect form, not girly style either!) , a little core work, and I am BEAT.

One of my 2010 goals is to be better at cross training and to start a resistance training program. I LOVE to run (obviously), but really slack off working out the rest of my muscle groups. And I know I can only benefit from it.

So my question to all of you....what do you do for cross training? And triathletes... swimming/biking/running doesn't count for you, that's a given. HA! Seriously though, how many of you cross train/strength train, and how often?

Happy Running friends!

I really only get my strength training in 2 x a week during the off season - then when I am in full IM training mode I switch over to yoga for my core training and let the sw/bk/rn take care of the other strength work (paddles in the pool, drills running, hills biking) When are you starting swim lessons!?!?

Cross training? What's that? LOL I keep saying I'll head to the gym one of these days, but it keeps not happening. Good thing it's a "pay as you go" place...

It is crazy because since I have started to run I have been putting cross training on the back burner. I need to get back into weights because I think it will help me. I hope you have a great night!

I'm a huge fan of the FIRST marathon training plans because they only want you to run 3x a week and cross train the other days. Even if (as a triathlete) I get in my target 14 workouts a week, it's still just 3 runs, 3 swims, 3 bikes, 3 strength training and 2 yoga sessions.

keep up your cross training and you'll be doing tri's in no time! I'm also eyeing my first xterra race, in the uwharrie mountains (NC) in may. That is def something for your to-do list. mountain biking rocks!

Way to grab your workout when you could. That's going to be a big adjustment for me, working out when I am able instead of when I want to. I am pretty bad at cross-training when I'm training for a race.

I'm no triathlete, but I always enjoy adding swimming and/or water running as a cross training activity when I'm running. Ah heck, ANY additional exercise is cross training to me!

Great job getting in a workout! I love that there was a triathlon on TV.

I can identify with the kiddos killing the p.m. run. You just blogged my life.

As for cross training, I start P90X before littlest and I got the flu. I just haven't gotten back to it since I registered for the Tussey Half Marathon this Sunday. But I intend to get back to it. I need to improve my core strength! I know it will help in my running!

Nice workout - your right, as a mom, you have to take what you can get. I love kettlebells for cross training - I can't believe how fast I have gained strength from it only from doing it for two months.

I do some strength training on an exercise ball and hand weights about once a week. It should be twice. That should be a goal for me. But I, like you, feel like I should do something else. Let us know if you find something that works for mamas!

Does Volleyball count? And Shopping? That is all I have..

Way to make the most of it!! My kids have NEVER gone to bed that early, WOW oh WOW

Way to go! See, I would have just gotten mad and sulked the rest of the evening b/c I wasn't able to go. Way to turn a negative into a positive!

Yep, no cross training here. I've been thinking about trying to squeeze it in, but lately nap times/bed times are when I finish other tasks that I failed to do throughout the day. Not sure if yoga counts, but I do love it!

Crosstraining?...Strength?...What the heck are those?

No, really, I find it very difficult to get the "extras" into my regular training routing. My first focus after swim/bike/run is always stretching. If I get some core once a week, I consider that a great week!

My 3 year old is eating everything in sight these days, too!!

GREAT job on your pushups!! Woot!!

2x/week I do aerobics - hard core, not the hot pant, thong wearing, head band thrashing kind your momma used to do...the kind that makes me wish I was 20 again.
the instructor is my FRF (fast runner friend). she really knows how to kick it!

Hi, I'm new :)
I started a spin class in July 2x a week, and I've improved my actual road biking by 1 mph, so it must do something! Also, I stick a pilates or yoga video in when my toddler's napping. I prefer the gym for cross-training, though - other people make me feel accountable to stay on a machine for longer!

Way to squeeze in some exercise!

I too am a FIRST runner. XT for me is cycling, yoga and lately some P90X and CrosFit.
Great job on those pushups!

Yup, can totally relate to those afternoons/evenings!

Cross training for me is a little time with the exercise tv station -- jillian michaels' shred, jackie warner's one on one training, and some other nutso ones that make me feel completely spastic and uncoordinated.

I feel your pain - the bike trainer has saved my workout plans many a time since the baby arrived!

I ride my mountain bike for cross training, and I'm looking to get a trainer for it as we get into the winter months so I can use it inside. and I'm reeeallly trying to get into yoga.

i'm really trying to become more consistent with cross-training, but sometimes it's just too hard to fit 'everything' in... so i'm happy on the weeks that I get my swim/bike/run done according to schedule!

I am terrible at cross training, and frankly, just don't do it.

Hi Heather, thanks for stopping by my blog to enter the giveaway.

Nice job going with the flow and getting in some cross training. For awhile I was doing strength training at the gym once or twice a week. I really need to get back into it. I just started biking again and hope to get out for a ride at least once a week. That's about it. I'm with you in wanting to do a triathlon, but I totally need to learn how to swim first too!

100 push up challenge sounds like a great idea! Way to get a great workout in! I'm new to the blog world and look forward to reading more of your posts!

Cross training, hmm, well, I do a few things. I bike, swim, lift weights, attend a few classes here and there.
