sesamoid is fun to say

WHEW. Final grades posted for the semester. I did better than I imagined which somewhat shocks me, because this semester was a blur. The past 5 days of vacation have been anxiety ridden, because I was almost certain I failed my statistics final. In reality, I still might have, but it didn't hurt my overall grade too much, haha.

Now that that's officially over (until mid-January) I can relax. Well, relax as much as you can with two crazy toddlers. Oh, and I have this house to clean, and bags to pack (we are headed to New Hampshire for Christmas, leaving this Friday!) Ok, maybe I can relax when we get to grandma's house.

On the running front...I'm afraid I need to step back from my own 150 mile challenge. My sesamoids are killing me. Gotta love anatomy and physiology class, now that I can name the bones I'm quick to self diagnose, haha. Ever since Friday's run (before the Newtons) the ball of my right foot, below my big toe (the sesamoids, right?) have been killing me. The Newton run on Saturday intensified it. I took Sunday and Monday off, and then ran 5 more yesterday. While the pain is not intense, it's lingering. Everything I've read about this self-diagnosed pain is that it's very common in long distance runners. Yipee.

Has anyone out there had this kind of pain before?

So instead of sidelining myself with an injury (the LAST thing I need right now!), I'm going to be smart and simmer down a bit, re-building my mileage up a lot slower. Which should be easy, considering I'm vacationing in the tundra next week. BRRRR! I've got a bunch of cold weather gear to test out, but I'm still a giant wuss. This should be amusing, no doubt about it. And yes, I promise to take pictures (hopefully none of me busting my a$$ in a snowbank)

On a somber note, Cancer to 5K lost a teammate this weekend. I never had the opportunity to meet Shawn Felty, but I heard so many others speak fondly of him since he joined the team last year. Shawn lost his battle to colon cancer, and the world lost another young life senselessly to cancer. I HATE cancer. I hate the pain it causes people. The fear and grief it leaves behind with their family, friends, and loved ones. The guilt of survivors who ask "why him, why not me?" It breaks my heart and pisses me off. This is another unfortunate reminder that until there is a cure, until cancer is a thing of the past, we can never ever give up this fight.

In the words of my friend Ross, "Rest now Shawn, we got this."

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, cancer sucks!

On another note, I had trouble with my sesamoids a while ago and would put crushed ice into a ziplock and wrap it around my toe for as long as I could stand it at least 3 times a day, it really helped! Good luck, I hope you heal quickly, that injury hurts!

I hate cancer, my mother in law is battling it right now.

That's pretty cool to know exactly where your pain is coming from! I know what you mean about stepping back a bit when you have pain, my hamstring is bugging me again but I want to keep running to keep all this holiday indulging at bay!

Heal your foot and then come back slowly. You know all of this already...

Cancer is one of the most horrible diseases. I watched my grandfather and father-in-law waste away from it and it was unnerving to see what it did to them. Good to see that you are doing something about it!

I have a lot of packing and cleaning too. I am flying from Hawaii to Connecticut! Hopefully we can survive the cold!

I'm so sorry to hear about your teammate.

A lot of my family has battled a lot of different types of cancer; it's a scary, horrible disease. I'm not sure that it's at all logical - esp. since not all types of cancer is hereditary - but a little bit of me hopes that my running will overpower my genetics...or at least send good karma my way.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. :(

On the foot pain note - could it be your foot adjusting to the way those Newtons make your feet strike? I wonder if with something like that you'd need to ease into it rather than go all at once. Just a guess.

Sorry to hear of the loss.

sorry to hear of the loss. this time of year adds to the edge, too. :(
self diagnosis is GREAT! to help, i would try gently rolling your foot over either a raquet ball or a golf ball. some of the pain may be related to tight muscles, and the balls can help. if you use a golf ball, chilling it can help, too.

Ooh, I've had pain there before too. Never knew what it was called though. I just ignored it and it finally went away, although that probably isn't the best course of action. :)

Safe travels!

Cancer sucks, and so do testy sesamoids. I had a problem with them earlier this year, and B Sue Fly is right, icing helped a ton. Hopefully yours will calm down soon!

I'm so sorry to hear about Shaun. You're right, cancer is AWFUL! I hate it too! I saw on Holly's blog some really lovely videos he was in - he seemed like an amazing person.

Also sorry to hear about your... sesamoid bone?! ARGH! Just in time for Christmas.

Congrats on your grades. I'm the eldest in my family, but have never finished my degree (shhhh) as jobs and my lack of patience keep getting in the way! My brothers (who have finished)have this great saying they use "P's make degrees!". Do you have that? Our grading system is (F)Fail, (P)Pass, (C) Credit, (D) Distinction, (HD) High Distinction. I love that expression.

Congrats on the grades! Cancer sucks big time:(
I have definitely had sesamoid pain, I just had no idea that's what it was. It's only on my right foot and only occassionally. It always seemed to resolved itself thankfully. I hope your's is feeling better!

I had pain in a simialr place on my foot (happened at Mile 23 of a marathon) and I self-diagnosed the problem as "metatarsalgia". Well, no matter the name, the bottom line is, IT HURTS!

I only reserve the word "hate" for certain things, and I do hate cancer. I'm sorry to learn about your friend.

I thought "Francisco" was fun to say.
(From the movie "Elf.) I guess "sesamiod" works, too. Now I know what that is, and that's what's probably bothering me as well.
