cold nose and icy toes

Call me crazy, but I don't remember it being so PAINFULLY cold here in New England!

To avoid the giant blizzard that struck most of the east coast, we packed the family up and drove the 18 hour drive up I-95 to New Hampshire about 15 hours early. We BARELY made it, the storm chased us the entire way. But we made it safe and sound, and pulled into my parents driveway at 4:30 a.m., with a temperature of 9 degrees F. Yes, 9 whole degrees.

And as it turns out, according to the weatherman, that 9 degree weather makes it actually TOO COLD to snow. Who even knew there was such a thing. So despite the chilly weather, I've yet to see it snow.

As you can imagine, this now converted Southern girl has left the house very minimally, and running has not been one of those occasions. I'm afraid my lungs will shrivel up and die if I go out there, even if my exercise physiology professor swears that's not going to happen. I wonder how DO you people do it? I keep reading blog posts and tweets about running in the snow, etc etc. I am seriously impressed with all of my Northern pals who bundle up and skip the treadmill.

If it gets up to 20 degrees today I may brave it (I never imagined I'd utter those words, ha! This from the girl who NEEDS her arm warmers when the thermometer drops below 58!) . It's currently 12.6 degrees, so we've got a ways to go. If not, I will continue hibernating with the great food and company. Thank you SmartWool socks for keeping my toes above frostbitten level. I thought you were a bit scratchy when I tried you on in South Carolina. Here in NH, I'm singing your praises!

Until next time, run WARM my friends :)

Wow outrunning the blizzard sounds so darn exciting! As for the cold, I'll take it over excessive heat anyday. And I think the FIRST plan will definitely make you faster...can't wait to see what you think!

okay, you're making me realize I just need to suck it up and go for a run this am. I'm in Cali and it's ~48-55 here, no complaints.
Merry Christmas!

I love the image of the fun run. I have getting out and running when it is under 32 degrees, so I feel your pain. Good luck getting in those workouts!

No fun at all!! I just loaded up on under armour and nike cold gear to get me through a CO winter. We normally don't dip below 30 and almost always sunny. However this month gave us some teens and below 10 degree weather that made me run in a short sleeved shirt on Sunday when it was 46!!!

You can do it girl!
It is an amazing feeling and when you finish you feel like you've gone on much more than "just a run".
Enjoy!

I just ran in about 25 F and it was GREAT!
but it was my first time that cold and usually run in 5 - 25 Celcius in the UK

I think 9F would have me hiding indoors

You have to get out there and run. You'll be cold for .5 mile, but you will warm up. Plus, you will feel so powerful and bad ass thereafter! Try it!

Glad you guys made it safely ahead of the blizzard. It pretty much effed up the roads all around the east coast.

I'll take a cold run over 90+ degrees any day.

I'm still trying to brave the cold, and I'm in CA (and a wuss!) BTW, where did you find those running figurines for the gingerbread house you have with this post. Those are the BEST!

We stayed put and then shoveled out. So much snow we just had to play in it! It's been great fun! Finally my roads are mostly clear for running. I went a few time on the snow and ice...I am glad noone watched the wonderful slip sliding form I had!

lol. nice job outrunning all the snow! it would've been quite the mess to drive through.

i'm no longer as tough at cold weather running as i used to be... i once ran in 14 degrees and thought i was all kinds of hard core :) now i run on the treadmill during the week and brave the outdoors on the weekend when i have more time/can run in daylight. hope you are able to get some (outdoor) running in!

merry christmas!
