when duty calls...

Friday, I had a "If I don't go for a run right this very second I may spontaneously combust in a ball of flames" mini freak out. It's almost the end of the semester, the pressure is on, the "back to school" savings account has long been depleted, and the kids are extra cranky that mommy isn't home every day. My stress level is dangerously hovering near the red zone. I announced to no one in particular that "Mommy's running. Now." No questions were asked, no one stood in my way (I swear even the baby gets it), so out the door I went. I let my legs do the screaming. It felt so good.

mile 1 - 9:20
mile 2 - 8:44
mile 3 - 8:29
mile 4 - 8:08
mile 0.6 - 5:08 (8:37/mile pace)

I felt like I could have kept going, at that speed, for another 5 miles. However, I didn't want the boys to think that I had permanently run away, so I called it quits when the running loop brought me back to my house. If I've said it once, I've said it 5,923,756 times...running is cheaper than therapy! And cheaper than alcohol, which is probably what I would have turned to if I didn't have running. Upon returning home, my problems didn't magically disappear, but they seemed a lot less menacing.

Today, I had plans for a fast, short training run. Today, I was going to give my new running tank sent to me by thriv natural performance a try. But today, Rowen had other plans. At 3 years, 2 months old, the boy who on most days refuses to be associated with anything potty-training related, decided to go diaper-less. All on his own, really. He woke up, took off his diaper, and announced he didn't want another one. I hate to jinx myself by telling you this, but we are on hour #7 with no diaper, and no accidents.

I'm in shock really. I was beginning to think he'd go to his prom in a diaper. But today, all on his own, he decided to potty train himself. I haven't really even done anything, other than open the bathroom door for him when he announces to everyone in the room that he's got to go, and read a few books to him while he sat there (what a man already, reading on the toilet!). I didn't want to take the chance that he would have an accident on Daddy's shift (I'll save that for this week when I'm in school) so I stuck close to home. Besides, I like to think my congratulatory potty dance is far superior to Daddy's. I'm just saying. And secretly, I didn't want to miss any of this big event. Seriously, who ever would have imagined I'd get so excited over someone else's excretory adventures?

So I don't have a thriv review for you yet, other than it works great for the potty dance. I wonder if they've heard that one yet? Their products are made from bamboo, which claims to be anti microbial and naturally resist odor...but here's to hoping I don't have to test that one out on this particular adventure.

The joys of motherhood, they never cease to amaze me :)

So glad the potty thing is going so well. I wish that would have happened for us, but as long as it happens, it's all good, right. But, sorry it made you miss your run.

His first push towards independence. Congratulations Rowen! Next thing you know he'll be making his own lunches then getting married.

YAY for self-potty training! My little guy was right around the same age when he finally potty trained. GL with the end-of-semester stuff! My hubby's going through that right now, too!

I've always said that if I didn't run, I'd be a 500 pound alcoholic 'cause I'd have to self medicate with food and booze to deal with my boys.

Yay for potty training. Shoo did the same thing with deciding to not wear a diaper. Unfortunately, it then took a few days before he understood that if he wasn't going to wear a diaper, he had to use a potty. Those few days really sucked LOL.

So there's hope, huh?
I've been BEGGING my 2.5 yr old to use the potty and he just says "no thanks!" every time. At least he's polite...

Oh, this gives me hope :-)

And, yeah, I know that NEED to run. It really is like you'll explode if you don't get out there.

Wait until you have both your kids out of diapers, my daughter just finished potty training. I no longer need the diaper bag so I always think I'm forgetting something wherever we go!

Haha - I saw the image and thought this was going to be a horror story about race bathrooms. This post was so much better than what I expected :-)

Isn't it great when a hard run can melt away the stress?! I swear my family would probably kill me if I couldn't exercise :)

when they are ready - they are ready . . . and pushing usually doesn't help . . . that was not meant to be a pun.

Just catching up on your blog! I know that marathon was tough for you--sorry. The distraction of the triathlon may be just what you need. Keep it up!

that is so great on the potty training thing! and you read to him- that is so funny! I have 2 little ones and I know how you feel about sometimes just needing to get out the door and do something for yourself- like exercise- to chill for a minute. I've been there!
