Yet I believe that running, being an individual and sometimes very selfish sport, could not be done without support.
Support from your family, not minding that you may sneak away for a few hours at a time to get in a long run. Or waking up with you at 4:00 in the morning, standing around for hours armed with cowbells and signs, ready to just to catch a few second glimpse of you as you run by in a race.
Support from running friends who push you on training runs to go just a little further, a little faster. Or the running friends who sometimes abandon their own goals, to stick by your side and make sure you cross the finish line.

Support from co-workers, friends, family, and even strangers, when you are running for charity, and fundraising for a cause very special to you.
Support from the amazing online running community, through blogs, facebook/myspace (and especially the kick butt moms over at the cafemom running group!)
Support from volunteers on a race course, giving you water, snacks, smiles and words of encouragement.

But sometimes, you will find support from places you never imagined.
There is this man in the next neighborhood over. I don't know his name, or anything about him, other than he looks slightly like a younger version of former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani. Every now and again I see him out for a power walk. More often than not, when I see him he is passing in his car while I'm out for a run. Without a doubt, every time I have seen this man, he gives me the most enthusiastic wave I've ever seen. Not just the common obligatory neighborly exchange of a wave as if to say "yeah, I see you, I'm not running you over with my car (this time), you're welcome". And no, not a creepy kind of wave that many ladies have encountered from time to time while out for a run. This wave is more of a "GOOD FOR YOU for getting outside and being active!!" kind of wave. I feel like if he had a cowbell, he'd roll down the window and ring it for me as I cruise by. And every time, it puts a smile on my face. I feel like I have a genuine cheerleader out there on the neighborhood race course.
I am willing to be the mystery man is not a reader of my blog. But in the rare case the man who lives at 198 whatever the name of the street is reading this post: thank you for cheering me on for the last 3 years. You don't know much it means to me!

Sometimes, the best form of support for the competitive type, is a little challenge. My goal for the month of December is to run 150 miles. A small feat for some, but I've never come close. So I've "challenged" my friends on Dailymile.com to "Heather's No School! 150 mile challenge!" . Actually, I gave myself 6 extra days, since I'm sure finals week (Dec 7-11) will kick my butt. But I digress. I'd like to invite any and all of you to join in! If you are not a member of dailymile.com, it's really quick and painless to sign up. You can add the last two days to your mileage , just be sure to join the challenge before you log your workout, or they wont register.
So, who is your support crew? Dont' forget to thank your cheerleaders next time you see them :)

Heather,
I signed up for the challenge, although I know I have no chance whatsoever to run 150 miles in December, but it will be good to have a goal.
My support crew: My family for putting up with my running and cycling which can sometimes be an unhealthy obsession.
Team in Training running friends, Facebook, Twitter, blogging friends.
I get lots of inspiration from many others that love running who work for a living, are raising their families.
Good luck on your challenge. Happy Holidays and happy running!!!
I joined your challenge, but I'm really only aiming for a little over 100. You'll keep me motivated, though.
Good luck!
I joined the challenge! It is so true about the support! I hope you have a great weekend!
Eek! Not sure if I'm up to the challenge but I should be! Love this post about support, we all need it! My husband, track club, friends and this blogging community keep me going, thanks so much!
My bestest support is my eldest son who sadly will be leaving for the Army in January so this may be my last wintery month to get in big miles. I may need to start therapy after he goes - for lots of reasons. I will give it my best to get in my 150. It would be a nice total for December !!!
I also have a few people along my usual routes who cheer me on nearly daily. They are some of the best support because I know they get nothing out of encouraging me. It's just super nice of them.
I have never gone on Daily Mile... Will check it out soon..
I Snuggle with my support crew every night...well my main support anyhow and in 2010 I get to return the favor to him as he trains for his first 1/2.
150 miles in a month...How the Monkey are you going to do that?? Good luck!
My biggest cheering section is found here, in Blogland. What a great network of people with the same goals, interests, and experiences!
Your waving neighbor reminds me of something that happened when I was training for my marathon:
I was driving down a steep hill, when I noticed there were a few people in running gear, standing and waiting for a fellow runner. This runner was obviously pushing herself as hard as she could to make it up this hill. I immediately knew what was going on. She was a newbie, like me! And she had guts! I was so impressed, that I couldn't help but take my hands off the wheel and applaud for her. I know she saw me because she smiled at me. I hope my little display helped her to keep going. I know she helped me, just by being out there!
unsolicited support from a waving neighbor, love it! my support comes from blogland, FB&twitter friends, my son, my boyfriend... and you're right, it's so appreciated.
i hope you dont mind but i copied the reindeer!! how do you get him to run????? where im using him (facebook) he is just still....i want him running!!!!! LOL
I love your waving, enthusiastic neighbor! That is so cool! I also love the way you told the story...you got a chuckle out of me. Anyway, good luck on that 150 miles this month. I do belong to Daily Mile, but I am not even close to running 150 miles in a month. Maybe I will sign up and see how close I get.
Good luck in the quest of the 150 mile month!
Support is key! Great post! And what a great neighbor!!!
Ambitious challenge, but you can do it! I am not sure how my legs are going to feel this month, although I think I need to get in about 100 miles this month to reach my goal of 1000 miles this year.
Good luck with your challenge! Never tried the daily mile - thanks, I will have to check it out!
Being supported by my family and hearing the "No Way!"s from my friends is so motivating I could never stop.
I too see the same person everytime - he's running the other direction, but we always have that "Look at you go!" smile and hello.
I would love to run 150 miles this month. My highest this year is just over 100, so I'm not sure...
So true about the support!
What a wonderful idea! I'm going to try and find you on dailymile and sign up. :) I already logged my miles for today, and I don't know if I'll come close to 150 miles... but we'll see!
My husband is so supportive, in fact he really encouraged me to go for my first marathon!
Just found your blog and love it! Looking forward to reading more.
Winks & Smiles,
Wifey
My support crew?
