Jillian Michaels is officially off of my "cool" list.

Jillian Michaels. I admired you. You have a rocking body. You inspire(d) people to lose weight and lead healthier lifestyles through your actions and your kick ass training.

I wanted to be just like you. Now, I just think you are a sellout.

Last night at work, i was killing some time looking through advertisements from the Sunday paper when I saw it towards the back of the Walgreens flyer: Jillian Michaels diet pills. DIET PILLS? WTF Jillian!
I recall, clear as day, on an episode of the biggest loser (probably more than one episode) where you claimed there were "no magic pills" to help weight loss. And now, you are selling , what, 4 or 5 different formulas, including "extreme maximum fat strength burner" and "extreme quickstart rapid weight loss system"

No, no, no, no, NO!!! Girlfriend, you and I both know these DO NOT WORK! Does it make you happy that you are now going to make a small fortune off of others desperate hope?? So they can loose a couple of pounds of water weight, and cram their bodies full of Lord knows what non-FDA approved junk?

You are making me sick to my stomach Jillian.

You have the opportunity to reach millions. To preach how important healthy eating and exercise is. Countless people look up to you for the changes you have made in your life, and for the changes you have helped others make in their lives. Countless people would do whatever you tell them to do, in hopes that even though they can't make it to "the ranch", they can still change their lives like the contestants on the Biggest Loser. And now, you are just lying to them. Leading them in the WRONG direction. You should be ashamed of yourself.

There is no easy way around weight loss, no magic pill. It takes hard work. It takes dedication. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY. To quote someone I respect loads more than Ms. Michaels, the only "secret" is the "GOYA" diet....GET OFF YOUR ASS!!!!! (Thank you, Christine Rockey!)

Ugh. I laughed it off when you started innocently hocking extra sugar free gum and Ziploc bags as a part of a regular weight loss plan. But diet pills? I'm disgusted. Dissapointed. Kinda laughing at myself for idolizing someone in Hollywood anyways, haha. The sellout was to be expected, it was really always just about the money, wasn't it?

**end rant***
Sorry folks, this one really worked me up ;) But Richard Simmons, if you sell out on me at this point (I forgive you for the faulty veggie steamer) all hope is lost!!!

I think it's impossible to be a celebrity fitness guru and not "sell out". The more your name is slapped on stuff, the more money you make. It's a sad state of things....

I can see lending your image to products, but diet pills?!?!?! I love the Biggest Loser, but I hate the segments where they do the product endorsements.

Swing by my blog, I have a giveaway I think you'll like!

I saw that ad in a magazine too and was disgusted.

Bummer.

I saw that too. The product endorsements they do on the show bug me but I can see using the products. Diet pills is just too much!

I saw this on TV last night and I was like WTF?!?!? I have never thought diet pills are a good thing and am saddened that Jillian sold out as well.

i watch biggest looser and HATE the way they curse at the contestants. they are so hateful sometimes. I KNOW its just a tactic to get them to do more... just not my style. It makes me sad for the contestants......

I am not surprised by this... $ is a powerful thing...

I'm with you - shame on you Jillian!

whaaaaaaaaaat?!?

ugggh i don't like her anymore either. well, i was never a HUGE fan, 'cause i don't think you need to flip out on biggest loser quite like she does. yes, those people need help and they need someone "in their face" but don't need to rip them a new one.

One thing I think people forget is that Jillian is not The Biggest Loser. She's mentioned this on her radio show several times, and doesn't endorse a lot of the things promoted on the show.

In fact, in what was coincidently her last radio show she specifically mentioned her distaste in a particular microwavable plastic bag integration/advertisement on the show. (I think this was it - download it here)

Also, I believe Jillian has always been a believer in supplementation for maximum results. A little research before you start bagging people might be in order. Also found this which has explanation and answers to some questions which is quite interesting about Jillian's Supplements.

I listened to Jillian's radio show and she does promote supplements for maximum results. She was always talking about taking caffeine pills to boost results. Supposedly her pills are all natural which I think is great. I wouldn't take them but if I had to choose I would go with the pills with all natural ingredients.

I've seen a lot of controversy over this, and it is so frustrating - you're right! She completely supports the pills, and agrees that they should have her name on them, but they are still diet pills / caffeine pills. It's a shame that she's promoting them, and it's even more of a shame that the general American public is so willing to jeopardize their own health by blindly following what a celebrity tells them to do.

Yeah, I had the exact same thoughts when I saw all that the other day. I hope the money is worth contradicting yourself and the loss of credibility you just earned. :/ sigh....

Jess said...

I agree. It's particularly manipulative for her to back diet pills.

Shelly, I do appreciate your input and the link. However, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...you get my point. I do not need to do any research to see that something in a pill form sold as a "fat burner" is a gimmick, or atleast entireley misleading (I do enough research on how the human body works while working on my bachelors in exercise science. Not saying I'm an expert, but a basic exercise physiology or human anatomy class will teach you that a pill is not going to give you long term metabolism boosts)

So she claims they are supplements and not diet pills, than why did she not market them that way? I promise you 90% of our society will see that product and think "oh nice, I can take this and lose weight the easy way". In my eyes, that's a diet pill.

As far as her "not being the biggest loser"...well there is something to be said for someone who promotes things they don't agree with . People offer me products all the time to promote on this website. If I don't agree with them or like them, I don't promote them. End of story.

Manderz...do not be mislead by the "all natural" label. Heroin is all natural. Ephedra is all natural. You see where I'm going with this? All natural doesn't necessarily mean GOOD.

GREAT post... There is no quick fit. Diet and exercise, burn more than you put in.. No BIG mystery or expensive diet pill needed. UGH!!

I am with you! I have been struggling with getting my weight down since the birth of my twins 3 years ago (I have really high cortisol because of a condition I have) despite my triathlon life style and I used to love that she was always saying there is no magic pill. This just makes me sick and she's no longer in my "cool woman" category!

Lisa said...

Eww, she is selling this stuff??? I think I just lost respect for her too. I hope Bob doesn't sell out now.

Never liked her. She looks scary to me - did you see her facial expression, it's like she is about to slap you, or she's had a hard life... These diet pills adds..yes, totally contradicting her philosophy. Boooooooooo to her!

RunToTheFinish said...

AMEN sister! seriously you cannot be on a show about weight loss telling them day in and day out there is no easy way...then do that!

Feener said...

i agree ...i would love to hear what jillian would say about this

HEATHER @ runfastermommy! said...

Feener, i would love to hear what she has to say as well. Since I posted this I have recieved a lot of critisism through emails, twitter, and facebook for being ill-informed. I've read the given links and still stand by what I said in this blog. If you eat correctly, you should be able to get every nutrient you need out of your diet, so I do not buy the "supplement" thing. Until I see some reputable scientific proof that there is a HUGE difference in weight loss while on the supplements versus not on the supplements, and it is still HEALTHY, I'm not believing the hype.

Hypocrite!

Yeah, that is completely ridiculous. Do you think she takes the stuff? No.

I saw that just the other day too. I had to wonder, wtf? It just doesn't seem like it fits the long-term success that they try to preach.

hqm said...

YES! I am totally disappionted, too! I saw an add yesterday and hollared at the television...UGH!!!!

Mel-2nd Chances said...

so disappointing. glad you posted this.

Oh well... another one bites the dust! Just when you think nutrition and fitness role models are about the REAL thing, they sell out. No, diet pills will not work. The only thing that will boost your metabolism is kick-butt workouts, eating healthy and regularly.

rUntoNamAste said...

What a fraud. Can't say I'm surprised though!

Amanda said...

I agree, I'm over Jillian and The Biggest Loser!

Kaci said...

I too was disappointed when I saw this. Bummer!

How much is your soul and you ethics worth? Only Jillian knows.

I was sickened when I discovered that Jillian Michaels was selling diet pills, but I was even more disturbed when I found out she was selling a 'cleanse and detox'. That is pure snake oil, as opposed to terrible advice and promoting the consumption of large quantities of caffeine... Okay, both items suck.
In any case, I expect this kind of behavior from people like the Kardassian sisters, but not from Jillian Michaels. You wouldn't believe who is manufacturing these pills by the way: http://bit.ly/RQ6pS

I realise this is an old post but I am now seeing it due to a blog I was on. She should have been off your cool list ever since the start of the Biggest Loser. I mean the show promotes rapid weight lost (100+lbs in less than 6 months, give or take??) there's is no way in the world such rapid weight loss is healthy. SO her endorsing diet pills is no different from her being on the Biggest Loser.
