It takes one to know one.

P90 X...you've all seen the infomercial, with the crazy ripped new mom, and the old guy who is more buff than he was in the military, etc. Well, a bunch of my co-workers and local bar frequenters have started P-90 X together. They are on maybe week number two or three. I like to ask them, pretty much on a daily basis, if the beer they are drinking is Tony Horton approved and a part of the official P90X diet plan. Hey, what's "family" without a little heckling, right?

But seriously, I have had this workout DVD set on my wish list since I first saw that grandma do a one armed push up. Today, while heckling discussing the P90X with my coworkers, I contemplated out loud how I just wouldn't have time to do it. OK, I would have time, but then I wouldn't have time to run as well. It's an hour long, 6 days a week program. I could just see Rich's eyes rolling when I announce to him that once I return from a 3 hour long run he's still on solo baby duty, because I'll be tackling a 1 hour DVD. Ha!

The resounding group answer to my thought was "well you wouldn't NEED to run if you were doing p90X" .

To which I replied, "but I LIKE to run".

Blank stares.

Them: "But, like, you wouldn't HAVE to run, this would be enough of a workout".

Me: " Sooo...when I show up to my next marathon start line I can say 'watch out everyone! I may not have run in months, but I've got killer biceps!' how does that help me run 26.2 miles?"

More blank stares.

Me: "I don't run to be skinny...I run because....never mind." (obviously they didn't' read my blog about how running is making me fat)

I got "This girl is nuts" stares from all around.

I started seriously running when my oldest son was just shy of 3 months old. I ran simply to try and shed the baby weight. I will never ever forget the first run, post baby. I hadn't been what I would consider an athlete in years, and I used my pregnancy as a PERFECT excuse to sit on my butt. So one day, I left the baby with Rich, and went for it. I ran/walked/struggled through a mile. It took me about 16 minutes. My face was red, I felt like I was having an asthma attack, and I got a huge blister on the back of my heel (yeah, from one lousy mile). I stumbled in the house, dizzy, and proceeded to puke my guts out. No joke. It was awful.

But the next day, I went out again. I despised the way my body looked and felt, and I wanted to fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes again. So I ran. And I ran the next day. And the next...and the next. And before I knew it, I was going further. There was less gasping and puking. Before I knew it, my clothes fit again, and I actually WANTED to run. I loved it. I loved the way it made me feel, and I hated the way I felt without it.

That was two and a half years ago. There has been another pregnancy/baby and a few spells without running since (some longer than others, thanks baby Kain!). I've loved running, hated running, and am back to loving running once again. I really can't imagine my life without it. I could list the reasons I love to run, but I'm pretty sure 95% of you reading this are fellow runners, so I don't need to explain to you, because you get it.

It's those non runners, they just don't' get us, do they? It's really too bad for them :)

today was 3.21 easy miles with the double jogger and both boys. 9 mile long run scheduled for Sunday, with a little UFC 100 satisfying my (not so) secret crush on GSP on Saturday night. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! But before you go: A little Linky LOVE to start off your weekend:

-A big thanks to Lisa at WorkoutMommy, for interviewing me as the "One Fit Mommy" of the week! And to everyone who made their way over here via her blog, welcome. Or as my toddler would say "what's up?" haha.

-Marlene over at Mission to Another Marathon is having a giveaway to celebrate her 500th post. Included in the giveaway are recovery socks, which are on my new current "covet" list, so I had to enter !

-Facebook friend/marathon maniac Brad posted this link on facebook today, and I can't get enough of it! You know me and my race medals! You should totally check it out: 26point2medals.com (Brad makes the very cool medal hangers for sale on that site. I have one and can vouch for how nice they are!)

That's it for today. Happy running, friends!

I want to be able to me like that someday! Its the tim. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week.. though right now its been 2 times because Jaymie is working so much.. but.. I could rest on going to the gym and NOT doing cardio on those gym days.. and run with the stroller the other few, right? Here's a deal.. I will try to run a mile every other day next week. Deal? Check up on me.

Yeah, I do other workouts because I'm old and I need to cross train, but really, I love to run. If my legs could handle it, I'd do nothing but run.

Non-runners just don't get it. LOL

Thanks for linking me up!

It's so true, non-runners don't get it at all. And they don't know what they're missing!

Would you like P90X with your vanilla gu I'm sending you? ;-) My dh wanted me to do it with him before baby no.2 , so I relunctantly agreed. Same problem waaaaaaayy too time consuming especially if you're going to try and run too. Wait 'til your coworkers really get into it and they find out Tony wants them to do 2 a days. Although I will admit, it was pretty amusing to watch Tony's crush on one of his students in the videos. I forget her name. Blonde lady, dancer. Anyway wonder how many of your co-workers will keep at it after the 90 days are up?

I've been in both worlds, meaning the world of body building and the world of running. I selected to stay more with the world of running. Running just suits me better. Weight training can enhance your running, but there definitely has to be some sort of balance so you don't kill yourself, either. My PT at sports rehab, who is also a runner and triathle, has done P90X, and said it is a good workout. He also said that, to have a body like that (on the commercials) you have to be pretty dedicated to the whole lifestyle, including your diet. He said that he'd rather not restrict his diet so much and have just OK abs than to resctrict his diet just to have 6 pack abs.

I can relate to the blank stares! It no longer bothers me, not just with the running, but with just staying fit. Besides, I'm not dealing with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems like they are.

Thanks for finding me! I do love that runnin'! I do find that is is a fabulous stress relief...especially with the 4 kids. There are so many reasons I love running...almost too many to actually list. I may be 37 but I am not washed up yet! It is nice to know that we all started somewhere.

I could give a rip who stares at me...because I know that I can out run them :)

i may not get it why you "RUN!", because when i think of running for fun or forced (when i was in the army) all that comes to my mind is the pain of both my knees swelling, not being able to bend then and having my left lock up where i was litery stuck till i got to the er. and there is my knee surgury, and all the physical therepy i went to just to be able to walk again with little pain.

BUT.. i love to walk, i can walk for miles stright up, flat, downhill, i feel gross and lazy when i dont get in at least a 30 min walk in pushing the kids in the stroller.

ive tried jogging but at the pace i walk (seriously im a speed walker) my knees start up again and im back to limping home.

so i think its awesome that you found your release and something you love thats healthy.

Non-runners truly don't get that we don't run just as a way to workout; for most of us, it's something much more than that. P90X is a great way to get and stay in shape, but like you said, it wouldn't replace running!

I get the same blank stares when I explain to people that I am training for my first marathon. They can't understand why I am just not happy with running something like 3-5 miles. I love to run. I've been sidelined now for a week due to feet problems and it's killing me. I want to run!

Hey Heather,
Do you post on the boards at Runners World? I lurk in the beginners forum there and have seen Brad's work there. I post pretty infrequently as "I like pink".

Love those Nike ads. I have a couple of similar print ads that I tore out of some magazines and keep as inspiration and motivation.

Nice blog post!

Ha, I hear ya!! I tried to do the P90X and train for my 1/2, and it was just too much. I'm saving it for the winter months when I might not be able to get outside due to sub-zero temperatures!!

I tried P90X but it was just too much. Maybe if my full-time job was to get ripped and run, then maybe....maybe...I could have done P90X and kept up running, but that's not the case so the X quickly fell by the wayside.
