This mornings run was "ehh". Not good, not bad, just ehh. But it was a run, which is good, so overall we are in the positive. I got off to a late start because I was waiting for my body to give me a good session in the bathroom. Pretty gross, I know, but let's face it, nothing sucks more than being a few miles into a long run and desperately looking for a bathroom. Or a bush (fortunately I've never had to use the latter...yet). You all know what I'm talking about, don't turn up your nose like "I can't believe she is blogging about poop!". heh heh.
So I decided I wanted to drive down to the beach to do my long run on Ocean Boulevard. It's between 9-10 miles of sidewalk from one end to the other, and early in the morning isn't overrun with tourists yet, so it's a perfect, scenic run. As soon as I pulled into the parking lot I realized I left Coach Garmin at home. arrrrrg! I was scheduled to do a 9 miler, but I'd just have to wing it.
The first two miles were not the best. I was in a mood from missing Coach Garmin (just goes to show you how much of a mind game running can be!) . The inside of my left knee hurt, and the instep of my right foot hurt. My mind was quickly crashing as I grumbled to myself "maybe I can do this another day". But I realized today WAS the day; Rich was home with the babies, and I have to work all week. It's now or never. So I trudged on.

I got to what I *thought* might have been about 4.5 miles (turns out it was only about 4.05) and decided it was time to fuel. On my quest to find the perfect race day nutrition, I'm giving a little bit of everything a try. Today's plan was the amphipod full of lemon lime nuun, and a GU. Now, I've tried many different energy gels in the past, but it's quite apparent I've never tried "Tri Berry" flavored Gu before. Because if I had, I certainly wouldn't have tried it again. *shudder*. The poor man walking in the oncoming direction was in for a real treat. I opened the gu and proceeded to squirt about half into my mouth. I try so hard to take it like a shot of alcohol so I don't have to taste it, but that's not exactly what happened. That nasty stuff sat on my tongue about 0.0001 seconds too long, and I started gagging. It was all I could do to swallow it.
Let me tell you, horrible tasting fake berry gu + lemon household cleaner flavored nuun water = barf. Don't worry I didn't, but for a second there, I thought i was going to lose it all over someones perfectly manicured, lush green oceanfront lawn. Ewww. I managed to choke down about 3/4 of the GU before I threw it in a beach access garbage can and went on my way.
The second half of the run was fine. I ended up walking for one little stretch (maybe a minute) around mile 6. The more I've been running, the more I feel my cardiovascular fitness coming back. Today, i was never gasping or wheezing in that fabulous out of shape way. I felt like I could run at that pace (which is a mystery , grr) all day. My legs however, are in a different boat. They are the ones that are in need of this distance training. Around what I'm guessing was mile 5, they just started to get angry. Not really crampy, just sore and tired. I would feel myself slowing down, so I had to force my body to push further and drag my legs along, haha.
Got home and used the "Daily Mile" with Google maps to map my run, and turns out it as only 8.11 miles. About a mile short. Que Sera Sera, I guess. I will put in a few miles tonight with the boys in the jogger to compensate.
Today's cliff notes of the nutrition experiment:
-I am currently 1 hour post run , and have yet to have any stomach issues with the Tri Berry Gu, other than the fact I almost lost the contents of my stomach trying to consume it, because it tastes so bad. I did feel that it gave me energy for the second half of my run, but I'm hesitant to give it a passing grade having only taken one. Next run I may try one pre run (in a different flavor by all means) and one every 45 minutes to see if the quantity has an affect.
- Nuun. Loving this stuff. Other than the lemon-lime household cleaner taste (or what I imagine lemon pledge to taste like, haha). I am not getting the post run headache and chills that I so frequently used to get after long runs. I've heard that some of the other flavors are much more enjoyable, so I might have to order some!I am thinking the Gatorade/powerade PLUS energy gels are what were really bothering me. Just too much sugar! We will see, as this experiment continues!
And one thing before I go...someone is always having some sort of blog contest, and I'm always entering since us runners can never have enough goodies and gear, haha! Erica over at "I run Because I can" is giving away some great stuff, so go check it out!
Hope everyone else had great runs this morning!

I was told to use this stuff after my scary experience on Friday (I blogged about it). Where can I find it? I've never heard of it before...and does it taste good with beer? LOL!
Try the vanilla flavor or the chocolate flavored Gu. They don't taste as fake and are a bit easier to get down.
Good job getting over the lack of garmin. Mine was having a hard time catching satellites yesterday and my husband told me to just go running without it. I told him he was crazy LOL.
MCM Mama
I LOVE the lemon/lime one. I take it in small dosages. I put a little on my tongue and swig it down with tons of water ~ like taking a pill ~ until the packet is gone. What's nice about the lemon/lime is that it leaves a refreshing taste in your mouth ~ unlike the other flavors that are less appealing to me. I feel like I have this thick cakey paste on my tongue...it's gross!
GU is nasty...I much prefer Carb Boom (especially the cinnamon apple one) or Jelly Belly sport beans. Neither are quite as syrupy sweet as GU.
I'm going to have to try Nuun after all of the positive things I've read about it.
That funny about the "bathroom" thing. I just blogged about things I've learned so far about running, and bushes were one of them! Yikes...
Kirsten, I LOVE cinnamon apple carb boom! But I'm afraid that one is the worst with the stomach problems...we will see, I need to experiment with that one and the nuun!
If Tri-Berry makes you gag, avoid the Orange Burst at all costs. I gagged on that one pretty violently. **shudder** I am a huge Just Plain Gu fan. Despite its name, it isn't flavorless gel (THAT would be gross), it is slightly sweetened and goes down easy. I also was surprised by how much I love Espresso Love. That seriously gives you a nice kick.
I wasn't a huge fan of the Nuun when I tried it, but I still have some left and will give it another go. I am currently using Vitalyte, which is low in carbs, high in electrolytes and has a very pleasant flavor. The guy at my local running store gave me a sample... you might want to ask at yours.
Also, on really hot and humid days I use Endurolytes. They completely eliminated my post-run headaches. They are electrolyte pills that you take before (or even during) a long, hot run.
Good luck finding the right balance. Good luck wtih your training.
I *heart* nuun. Triberry nuun is better than lemon-lime, in my opinion.
I'm not a fan of gu-like stuff. It all makes me sick.
I had the gu once for an 8 hour indoor cycling fundraiser. Most.disgusting.thing.ever!
I can't do GU anymore. I threw it up at the Chicago Marathon back in 2007 and since then can barely stand to look at it. I've never tried Nuun, but everyone seems cookoo for it, so perhaps I should.
I must be a freak b/c I love Gu. The only flavor I didn't like was chocolate. Going to get some Nuun! I can't drink too much Gatorade. That seems to be a stomach issue causer for me. Good job on your run.
I think I'm going to have to try Nunn.
i used to be a gu girl...now i am a jellybean woman...gu seems to be, apart from foul, full of non natural products. But if you have to gu it, try vanilla, or natural.
I love the chocolate GU (tastes like chocolate pudding), and also the vanilla (v easy on the stomach). I am not one for fruit flavored gels - never work for me. I love the Nuun as well - orange ginger is great! Ana-Maria
I dont really know anything about GU or Nuun I just wanted to stop in and say I love the new look of your page I have been really wanting to get my running blog done but not sure. Also I so grabbed your button. :)
I've been mixing Gu in my water that I carry on my hydration belt, otherwise it would really be Ewwwww! I still have yet to try Nuun, but it sounds like something that would completely agree with me. I appreciate your feedback on the Nuun.
I love NUUN!! Right now on my runs I fill up one NUUN and water and take a hammer gel (apple cinn or vanilla). I have found hammer gel to be much easier on my system. I usually wash it down with water and drink the NUUN alone.
Google Macmillan Running Pace Chart and look under the endurance runs column. It tells what pace you should run your easy run days and long run days based on a recent race time. Very helpful!
I love GU--Strawberry flavor, Chocolate Outrage, Vanilla, and Just Plain (mild vanilla flavor). Don't give up until you've tried them all! I think their consistency is better than the others.
I haven't tried that Gu flavor, but I like the Roctane orange-vanilla one. None of them are delicious but they get the job done. I think blogging about poop is an essential part of any running blog..we all do it, and we all try to get it done before the run!
I used to think that "Gu" was "Ew" but have gotten used to some of the flavors. I hope you find one that has less of a gag factor for you! One thing I do find is that I can ONLY take it with water... no flavored liquids.
Good job on the run, facing some tough mental obstacles!
And yeah, about the bathroom issues, we have ALL been there.
As you can see from above, Chocolate is the way to go. It tastes like you are eating fudge! On long runs, I'll eat the Espresso flavored only because it has 2x caffeine which can get you going, but the taste not so much.
I also enjoy sport beans, not so high in electrolystes or sodium, but they are good to snack on mid-run and proved a little energy boost.
Hi there! I had the same problem with any flavored GU's. My first one I did not hold down and puked all OVER a 15K finish line... it was chocolate and GU was new to the market so I'm sure people thought I was some sort of Poltergeist voming brown all over!
Anyways, it's take a while but what I've found works is...
-1 PLAIN GU before a long run
-2 Sports beans every 2 miles on the mile
-Mile 7 1 PLAIN GU (no flavor) taken with WATER! Anything else is too much and my stomach no likey!
... Rinse and repeat!
Oh... also, this weekend I found that some races are starting to offer soda or "pop" if you prefer to call it, every few miles. A small cup is supposed to settle the stomach up in the higher miles (13+).
I also do best with the chocolate/vanilla flavors, but my husband thinks they're horrible!
While he prefers the fruity flavors, I compare them to fruity-flavored hair-gel (not that I've ever actually consumed hair-gel)!
I do love the EFFECT of gu though, so - I've consumbed a BUNCH! :)
Happy Running!
BANANA NUUN. And I have a VERY picky stomach.
That's all I have to say about that.
I'm not sure how I found you (Twitter perhaps?) but I'm glad I did!
I like the chocolate GU. It's the only one I can handle. Anything fruity just doesn't go down well.
And as a running newbie, I'm glad to read about post run headaches. They are killer and I just assumed because I have a history of migraines they were natural only to me. So thanks for the product suggestion!
I found out that I can't do any GU with caffine or I get tummy churns! I do OK with Powerade's vanilla GU. I will have to try the NUUN. I keep hearing good thing about it. YOu drink it instead of a Gatorade for the electrolytes right? I'm just starting week 4 of my marathon training and feeling the same on my long runs as you! Great job going out even though you didn't have your Garmin!
My coach has been telling me that I really need to start doing Gu during my long runs, but I hate that junk. He's also a big fan of NUUN. I prefer the sports beans, but he doesn't think they work as well.
I have to fight the gag reflex every single time I take a Gu, no matter what flavor. I keep hoping it will go away, but nope.
