1) people are just rude and simply do not care. This one makes me sad, which led me to come up with:
2) it's morning, and these tourists have not had their coffee and newspaper yet. Yes, they are just walking to breakfast. Who am I to judge those who have not had their morning caffeine yet?
3) Lazy people highly dislike the non lazy folk. Hence all of the stories I've heard about bikers/runners getting slurpees and soda cans chucked at their heads by passing cars.

But back to the running....
And in case anyone has been wondering, I work at an outside restaurant/bar where I will inevitably be covered in cocktail sauce, sweet tea, and sweat (since it's a million degrees out) by lunch time anyways, so it does not phase me in the slightest to show up to work covered in post run sweat. haha.
I headed into work, dropped off my stuff, and felt my tummy rumble. I ate a Luna Bar and a banana for breakfast but apparently that wasn't enough. I don't usually "gu" or anything like that before a short run (planned 5 for today). But I had one with me and thought, what the heck, let's give it a shot. BOTTOMS UP!!
Today's experiment: Power Bar Gel "refuel" Step 2 - in Strawberry Banana with 1x the caffeine (that's a lot to say). It claims to be a C2 max higher -octane carb blend, whatever that means. All I know is they had them at Walmart, so I bought a box of 6 to throw into the nutrition experiment lineup.
I opened it and took a taste. Surprisingly, didn't gag! The flavor says Strawberry Banana, but I'd rename it "Maple Syrup". Seriously, I thought it tasted like maple syrup! Almost the same consistency too, not nearly as thick as GU. So on the taste chart, it gets a passing grade. Washed it down with some water and took off out the door.
To spare you a long boring story with my splits and what not, I'll just sum it up like this: it took me about 4 miles to actually "get into" my 5 mile run, haha. Mile 0-2 were ok as I just convinced myself to keep going, but miles 2-3 I felt so lethargic. I even stopped to walk a few times (and I had been doing so well NOT walking lately!!) Ironically I had pasta for dinner last night (not carb loading, just a dinner request for "doodles" from the 2 year old) . I was hydrated, and breakfast was normal, so I don't know why I felt so sluggish. So basically not only was I not energized, but the PowerGel didn't help at all. Unless it takes 45 minutes to work (it might, again Sports Nutrition isn't until this spring semester, haha), I give the Power Bar Gel a failing grade for energy. Although the label says "for immediate energy, consume with H2O every 20-45 minutes during activity"
So that was that. Nay to the powergel , sidewalk hogging tourists, and bad run, but yeay for getting a 5 miler. My dad had this bumper sticker on his tackle box that said "A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work". I'd like to apply that motto here, just substitute running for fishing :)

I am a former college runner...a husband, three boys, and 10 years later I am still running although not competitive. I say this b/c your site has inspired to me start the old grind again. I am unable to get a run in outside today so I am unfortunately getting on that stinkin piece of running equipment that sits in my basement, I don't even want to call it by its proper name. Let's just call it a dreadmill. Thanks for the encouragement and keep up the running.
Heather,
The last couple of weeks that I have gone running at the Irish Snug, I have seen some less than stellar behavior from the early running group. They run 6-8 across and force me and Keegan off the sidewalk so they don't get impeded. It is kind of sad, as this is a fun running club, not a 5K race.
I don't know which one of your options I would vote for, but I am afraid I would almost lean strongest to #1.
About the only GU I have had any luck with is just plain Vanilla. All the others do nasty things to my stomach...
Glad you got a 5 mile run in. I eeked in a 3 mile run this morning. Better than no run at all.
I am hoping it is #2. I don't live in a tourist town and I have never had a problem with people not getting out of my way while running on the sidewalk.
Today at the store I bought some ice cream flavored Jelly Belly jelly beans that I am going to try on my 9 miler Saturday. I still need to buy the Nuun. I am having a problem though because I only have a handheld water bottle and the water gets hot in 5 minutes. I may just need to buy a belt to see if that helps.
Around here, it's definitely #1, sigh.
As far as the run, some days the body just doesn't cooperate, for no known reason. I've never tried the power bar gel. Gu (not the caffeinated or roctane stuff) in vanilla is the only thing I ever use.
MCM mama
As far as I know, runners are still pedestrians. Right? Sorry you had such a rough run. Maybe those people just aren't used to seeing people running in 90+ degrees? I might look at you like you're crazy, but I'd move aside and let you by ;)
I have always prescribed to the notion that people are jealous of runners' dedication... Either that, or they think we're crazy. Or both.
But fear not, I imagine many runners have felt your sidewalk pain. I have been shouldered, heckled, splashed and chased by a few dogs. Onward I go.
Just discovered your blog and enjoy it a ton. Keep it up!
i bet a lot of the rudeness came from the fact that they're (most likely) tourists and YOU were running on THEIR sidewalk during THEIR vacation! (how dare you?)
i've had a little bit of trouble with being forced off (well, 1/2way off) of the sidewalk while running with the munchkin, but i think that was probably just people not thinking.
i'm glad you've been reviewing all of the gu and nuun and stuff--i have ZERO idea about any of that stuff and need to start figuring it out. (should i use something like that for a 1/2 marathon or is that too short a race to really need it?)
You've encountered what I call "Walmart etiquette". In my local Walmart, people think nothing of standing two abreast with their shopping carts, blocking aisles and blocking exits. I don't know when, why, nor how this all started, but I think it's related to "The World Revolves Around Me" Syndrome. It's characterized by an outrageous sense of entitlement that makes people forget about decency.
Some of it may be just plain laziness. I suffer from this, too, I guess. I'll run 26.2 miles for a stinkin' medal, but won't walk across a restaurant for a soft drink refill ... I send my kids instead!
Since when did Walmart carry Power Gels???? I've been out of the shopping loop! I try to avoid Walmart if possible, unless I need something after midinght, and the one by us is always open.
I guess some days are just sluggish. I hope that means your next run will be fabulous.
I don't understand why people have to be so rude. Sorry to hear the power gel didn't help, but glad you didn't gag! I am very jealous of your husband getting 11 hours of sleep.
Some people just don't seem to understand sidewalk ettiquette: If you're two or more abreast, you must move into a single file when you approach another pedestrian! Even when I am walking with my dog, I move over for passersby.
Ooooh have you ever had DRIVERS try to run you down? I've noticed, even if you're on the sidewalk it seems that obeses people and smokers tend to aim their cars right for you!
I've noticed the same thing. I hope that it is because of number 2, but unfortunetely, I think it might be the first one. I've even had people make snarly comments to me when I've barely clipped them on the shoulder, even though they are walking four abreast and I'm in the grass!
Tara
of all the gels and gus i like powerbar strawberry banana the best. reminds me of yogurt.
i think people are just CLUELESS and don't realize that they aren't the only ones out there. sigh.
Agreed on the bad day of running bumper sticker. Sometimes there is no real reason for a bad run. The good ones make up them.
I tried a caffeinated Gu the other day and it made me fairly peppy. Then again, I was already at mile 5 during a 14 miler when I took it.
People are indeed clueless. I'm with Lisa on that one.
We don't have any sidewalks around here, just country highways with very little shoulders. And instead of pedestrians pushing me, its cars trying to nudge me into the ditch. Obnoxious behavior either way!
Good job getting the run in. I agree: a bad day running is WAY better than a good day at work.
Completely agree with the motto! Bummer about the sluggish run, but you got it done!
What the heck are sidewalks for if you can't use them I say! Pfft. I think people are just rude!
"Lazy people highly dislike the non lazy folk." LOL you crack me up sister!! Although I encounter few in small-town Puyallup I have Run (LOL) into a few peeps who think they own the sidewalk, I usually barrel really close to them with my 6'0 self and scare them out of the way.
Good work with the experimenting, you will find the right fit... Soon I hope :)
Wow, RUDE!!! I have had a few issues with runners that feel...'uncomfortable', i guess? looking at other people in the eye while passing by, so they generally look down at their watches, instead of watching where they're going, and almost run into me. thats SLIGHTLY understandable though. maybe it was a one way sidewalk? ive never heard of such a thing...but MAYBE? one way roads have never made much sense to me either.
Totally true on the running motto. I'm a new reader and just wanted to let you know that I think you're totally inspiring - so thanks for that!
That's why when I run it's on a trail. People seem to have more courtesy there than on the sidewalks. Plus the cement sidewalks kill my knees. Sorry people were so rude to you.
If I had to guess it would be reason number three. If I have a choice between sidewalk and road I always take the road (depending on traffic). I’ve always find it that the people on the side walk won’t move and I hate it when they mess up my pace. Plus anybody can run on the sidewalk it feels more adventures to run on the road.
That’s my two cents.
Just found your blog today and I'm glad I did! I'm a new mom (my daughter is 4 mths old) and it's great to read about other moms and their running adventures!
Wow!! That is extremely rude! I have 2 toddlers in a double stroller and a fiance and we used to walk on this really tiny bridge where you could walk 2 at a time and we would either stop at one of the little "balconies" (for lack of a better word they were these little things that looked like balconies jutting out looking over the river) until the runner passed us or we'd squeeze to the side single file until the runner was by. Maybe I'm just overly polite because my mom's a runner but for 1. I don't want to be run over by someone who's RUNNING. and 2. I just want to be respectful and make someones day just that much easier. It's not taking any time out of my life.
Bleh. I'm sorry you had to deal with them and I hope for number 2 too. Although I'm a HUGE coffee addict *sip* I would never justify being rude to ANYONE because I didn't have my coffee first.
OH P.S.!!! yay yay yay!! I can finally comment on your blog!! I try every entry and my computer never lets me. Maybe it's cause I upgraded my firefox!!
