but there was no GU, only ice chips...

This weeks Take it and Run topic at Runner's Lounge: Running is Like...

Well, I guess there are many things that running can be compared to. But being a running mommy, I couldn't pass this opportunity up to share with you my comparisons of running and pregnancy:

I was completely miserable in my last few months of pregnancy with Kain (60 lbs heavier and the end of a hot summer in the South, who could blame me) I just wanted it to be over, so people, knowing I was a runner, would try to be helpful and kept saying "oh just think of it as the last 4 miles of a marathon. You are almost done! The finish line is near!".

Here I was, "close to the finish line". Have you ever seen anything like it? Yes, there is just one baby in there. No, I don't know how I didn't fall over from the weight of it.

Anyway, that analogy just made me angry. It made me want to spout off my smart mouth with something along the lines of "you try having this kid using your bladder as a trampoline", or better yet, throw something at the well meaning commenter. Often this happened at work, and more often than not I was serving beer in bottles. You see where I am going with this. It could have been dangerous. We will blame the hormones, of course.

Does this remind you of anything? Kind of like when you are mile 22 of a marathon, and a well meaning spectator in the crowd shouts "don't slow down now, the finish line is just around the corner!!" Meanwhile you want to throw a gel pack at their head and yell back " yeah buddy, and that corner is still 4.2 miles away!! Easy for you to say from your cozy lawn chair, YOU get out here and run!!"

As you can tell, I was a horrible pregnant person. I hated it the first time around. Yet, there was a second baby. Remind you of something again? How about "why did I sign up for this! I'm NEVER doing this again" and 24 hours later you are searching the internet for the next marathon you can register for...

Race expo? Can you say BABY SHOWER!? Nothing like the latest gadgets and freebies to get you excited for the "big day!"

And talk about finisher's shwag: two perfect healthy babies!! The only thing better than that post marathon runners high is holding your brand new baby for the first time!! You want to brag and tell anyone who will glance your way all about what you just did.

Painful post race icebath, lost toe nails, and sore muscles making you wonder why just put yourself through this? Um, let me just say, sitz baths, stitches and engorged breasts.

(Sorry guys and squeamish folk, it's reality, blame mother nature, I didn't invent it.)

So as you can see, running is a lot like pregnancy and childbirth. I even set a 22 hour labor P.R. from the first baby to the second, HA! Where's my age group trophy???

V well said. And so true. I have enjoyed the marathon much more than the pregnancy and recovery was also easier. However, who can beet the pregnancy prize? Ana-Maria

That picture--holy shit. How big was that baby? I have a similar picture, only I"m not smiling like you are.
You're right. There are a lot of similarities. But.... I have to say that the first three months post-birth aren't quite as good as the post-race glow and party.... :)

only 8 lbs 2 oz, and a week early. Thank goodness, a week early!! The rest was a lot of amniotic fluid. And Taco Bell.

Holy moly Heather! I didn't realize you were SO pregnant! haha Don't worry, you didn't miss anything at the beach. Jenn wasn't there. I was supposed to see her this evening, but I am wussing out after our huge dinner in Murrell's Inlet. Ugh! Definitely going out tomorrow night. You working? If not, you should meet up with us for a little while.

Love the post! Thanks for stopping by my blog! The picture is fantastic - I really wish I had taken one before I gave birth.

thanks for stopping by my blog, and excellent post! I only had one child, maybe cuz it reminded me of those last miles of a marathon too? :D

I always use the birth analogy when discussing marathons, however, my husband compares it to having your hand slammed in door for several hours... *Dork*

When you're 10cm, it is sort of like the last few miles, and in both instances I didn't like hearing "you're almost there!"

Great post!

Haha Awww!! I loved this post!

And can I say it?? DANNNNG I really had to think "DID she have twins?" But you were still way smaller than I was every where else. That's just one big belly!! LOL

Oh you have TOTALLY outdone any of your previous posts. I am LAUGHING so hard I can't take it. THANK YOU for this. Especially the "I am never doing this again" you hit that spot on..

And oh my that belly looks painful..

That is a glam belly shot:) How big was that babe?

Love love this comparison. Great post!

I have seen something like this but worse...you should have seen my twin pregnancy. I think there's a pic if you look at my tummy tuck pics. Everyone said I was the biggest pregnant person they'd ever seen. I could imagine runny with it all in front though! Ouch!

What a GREAT post!! Trust me, I looked exactly like you did in that picture, I was also 60+ lbs heavier, only the baby that they plucked out of me was 9lbs 4oz. Yikes!!

What a great analogy!

AWESOME post!!! I can TOTALLY relate! My second pregnancy was AWFUL!! And yes, I had BOTH my kids in August...the hottest month of the year. And since the youngest was born just last year, it's still fresh in my mind. I was sitting here reading this, smiling, and nodding my head the entire time - GREAT read! :)

Stephanie Nichole said...

But the BIG question... which one hurts more??? Let me remind you-- I've never had kids and this may or may not drive me away from ever having kids! haha JK!!!

HEATHER said...

Stephanie-kids-no doubt. and DOMS is a cake walk compared to post baby. But the kids are sooooOOOOoooOOOO worth it!!!

Loooove the analogy! So perfect. I can't say I can relate just yet, but maybe one day... :)

Heather,

Great analogies. You are so creative. Nothing worse than a well meaning person to tell you that you are almost there.

Congrats on that 22 hour PR. That sounds like a BQ for sure :)

Jess said...

While I haven't actually delivered this kid yet, so I haven't "finished" this race, I can wholeheartedly agree with your analogy!

Jenny said...

oh, you are funny! (and so right!)
and how *did* you keep from falling over?

Alison Barkman, MS, RD said...

Did the marathon thing already. Six months into pregnancy and I couldn't agree more. I've been comparing pregnancy to race training all along. I'm sure as my due date grows closer I'll feel the same way I did in the last month before the marathon: enough already, I'm ready, bring it on!

RunningLaur said...

Wow, your photo is amazing!

I love that you set a 22 hour labor PR too - hilarious!

DANG GIRL! I am not, and (hopefully, for my baby's sake!) will not be giving birth anytime soon...but oh wow, perhaps i should start doing a bunch of marathons to prepare myself for the heinous journey.

YOU are so cute preggers though! You're belly is *and i say this with the greatest amount of love possible* HUGGGGGE!, but the rest of you is so little and cute! lucky girl!

Krystyn said...

I certainly don't run, but I think I did the analogy!

I'm a new blog follower of yours! I LOVE your blog! I ran throughout my entire pregnancy and ran the day I delivered (4 miles). Now my little one is 9 months and I am training for my first marathon in January. So, your site is awesome, so true, and encouraging there are other running mommys out there!
