speedy mama

A while back I vented in a post about how I had no idea how I was going to accomplish this F.I.R.S.T. training program with the crazy schedule I have. One of my local running mommy friends read that post, and made an awesome suggestion for speed work: we would meet early in the morning and run at the track together, taking turns watching the kids (my two and her three). GENIUS idea. After all, chasing toddlers is considered "recovery" between intervals, right? See moms? Yes you CAN find the time to exercise!!

Today would be our first speed workout. Rowen was still sleeping so I left him alone with sleeping daddy, packed up the baby, and off we went. And wouldn't you know, it was POURING rain this morning? But despite the rain, it was still around 75 degrees, so I just used this opportunity to finally test out the Weather shield for the BOB. It worked like a charm! The baby was completely dry in his little green house.

So, this morning I did my "speed work for a once again beginner". 800 m warm up, 4x400 m at about 90% (which isn't that fast at this time, haha, about 6:20/mile pace or about 1:40 for a 400) with a 200 m walk in between 400's. Finished with a 1600 m (one mile) cool down...two of those cool down laps with the jogger. I was soaked, the speed work kicked my butt, and I wouldn't have had it any other way!! It was perfect, and I'm so glad to have found a speed work solution. Thanks again, Christine!

In other running news, I learned a very important lesson on a 3 mile beach run yesterday afternoon. While running barefoot may be more natural and easier on the legs for some, I have discovered I am NOT one of those people. I got out of work an hour early, so I threw on some running clothes, left my sneakers behind the bar, and took off. A perk of working steps away from the beach! I made it about a mile and a half before I turned around, and that's when the pain started. My achilles, and even more so the medial side of my soleus muscle were very, very sore. I guess my foot just needs the support of sneakers. Oh, and and FYI: 3 miles barefoot in the wet sand/shoreline will leave your feet with some nasty blisters. OUCH! It was a beautiful run, however, and I realized that despite the fact I complain about our lack of elevation, mountains, trails, hills, or even slight inclines for that matter, I am still very blessed to have this view!! (took this picture of the 2nd avenue pier during yesterdays run).

After three running days in a row, tomorrow will be cross training. Time to let these legs heal! Happy Running everyone!

I've NEVER run w/o shoes. But, then, I have some freaky funky feet. In fact, I actually never walk around bare foot b/c it kind of hurts. Your picture makes me want to go to the beach and slurp up some salty water while boogy boarding!

DC Running Mama: Ouch! I love walking around barefoot, which is why I was surprised the beach run hurt so much :( The water is super warm this time of year!!

Thanks Fair Weather Runner! The beach is nice, but I would get my butt whooped on a trail run, that's for sure, haha!

I would suggest getting the 20oz bottle. I bought the little one when I first started running and it's actually pointless on the longer runs. The 20oz is easy to hold and it's not too heavy. I use the little one if I'm running under 3 miles, that's how little water it holds.

Thanks Denise! that's what I was worried about...seemed somewhat pointless to carry around 8 oz of water. I will order the larger one. Thanks again!

Beach running is tough! I can't imagine running the beach barefoot! Great job on the speedwork. The first time is always the toughest but I am sure it will get easier as you continue to do it!

Oh, so jealous of your beach run! Yeah, the blisters but the view...so great. :)

You give me hope that I'll still have a running life someday whenever I have kids!! It's something I really worry about. I'm really impressed with your speed work, too, I'm pretty sure my legs have never seen a 6:20 pace.
