No one ever told me...

The "take it and run" topic over at runner's lounge today is "Yeah, no one ever told me this about running" and have a I got one for you.

No one ever told me, that a sport as simple as putting on some sneakers and running out your front door, could be so flipping EXPENSIVE! OK, OK. Maybe I don't NEED to run a gazillion races, and have all the fancy gear, the GPS watch and dri-wick clothing....but well, I WANT to! And even the simplest of runners still need to fork over the cost for new shoes every 300-500 miles. Unless you are so zen you run barefoot, in which case, I applaud you. My feet still have blisters from trying that.

Perhaps it's the addictive personality that most of us runners have that makes us want to go faster, further, do more, have more. Come on, you know it's true. Why else would we compulsively log miles and obsess over days we can't get out there and run. Boy oh boy do the companies who make running gear love us. Tell us that your product will make us faster, one step closer to a P.R., and there isn't a price we won't pay. You should have seen the look on my friends faces when I told them exactly what that huge, tacky watch was for (Garmin 305) and what I paid for it. I can almost see you all nodding, I'm sure you've had the same conversation with some non-runner friends!

And don't even get me started on triathletes. Thousands of dollars for a bicycle, thousands more on the rest of the gear, and you STILL fork over almost $500 just to ENTER an Ironman? You people are crazy. And I can not WAIT to join your ranks :)

Now, to the topic of the 50+ club. And by this I don't mean the AARP, I mean the run a marathon in every state plus D.C club. I aspire to do this, preferably before I turn 50 (simply because it's fun to say "50 in 50 by 50!") My bank account cringes at the thought of this. Marathon entry fees are now around the $100 range. Then you add a hotel stay, travel costs, and time off from work....it appears I might need to win the lottery. Or find a sponsor-anyone in the market for a front-of-the-middle-of-the-pack mom of two? I smile pretty and win some local age group awards every now and then!! I'd be an asset to your team, I swear!

Christine and I sometimes ponder the prices of celebrity purses and how much of the 50 states feat we could fund with them. I think we could get pretty far with this lovely number: Heidi Montag and her $22,500 Balenciaga bag. Yes, you read that right. $22,500. I genuinely hope it came with $22,450 inside.

OK, OK, I shouldn't make fun of the purse. After all, I know people scoff at the fact that I give someone else $100 to let me run 26.2 miles. To each his or her own, and whatever floats your boat, right? Right.

So there you have it Runner's Lounge. No one ever told me that running would break my piggy bank. And now, I will spend the rest of the day googling "marathons in North Dakota" and day dreaming of the day I can say "hey kids, it's family vacation time. How does Idaho sounds? Oh what a coincidence, there is a marathon there that week! huh, whatdyaknow!"
Happy running friends :)

WORD!

So much for this being a cheap sport! Pffft!

I would also LOVE to travel to races all over the country/continent/world, but it's so damn expensive...

It stinks it costs so much to run races! But i guess it could be worse!

LOL! Seriously, have fun on your marathon in Fargo.

I also am surprised at how much running crap I purchase on a monthly er, weekly (shhh) basis.

This post is awesome, btw. Made me laugh.

Very true J, I work in a bar, and tell myself on a regular basis "at least I'm spending the money on a healthy habit and not on vodka!"

Hey now, the Garmin 305 is no tackier than that purse! And fewer alligators died for it. Oh man, I'm still cracking up.

You are so right on with this post!! I was nodding and laughing the entire time.. I figure I dont have a monthly gym membership so I can take that money and use it toward my running... Idaho is a nice place :)

Yeah, I think that the "you only need shoes, it's such an inexpensive sport" myth is one of the worst out there. At least you can buy things a little at a time.

I also thought about running 50 marathons in each state. But first I have to get through my first one.

You can make fun of the purse. It cost what some people make in a year's salary, and no matter how you look at it, that's just silly. And good lord, it's a huge purse. You could smuggle a toddler in there!

This is so true! Such a good one. Running seems like it would be cheap. And I guess it could be if you just go for casual run here and there. But if you're serious about it, just like with any other sport, you need/want new stuff all the time.

I hear you on the marathon fees...it's one of the things that keeps me doing just a couple/year closer to home. I have several friends who want me to do Chicago...but the registration is ~$100 and that doesn't touch lodging, transportation, meals out, swag...

Luckily there are some great, smaller marathons that are more budget-oriented. I kind of like not wading through 10k+ other bodies, too.

sooooooooo true!!! you would think running is "cheap" haha yah right!

AMEN sista!

And to think we sign up for these things for a $100 t-shirt (our medal)! LOL!

I am with you.
It's not that the gadgets are required, it is that your mind makes them become necessities. And some of them are useful - my Garmin helped me get much faster. But most of them? Nope. And did you notice that the price of running shoes keeps going up? And while I can buy a bike off of Craigslist, I can't buy my running shoes used...Ana-Maria

I also never thought I would convince myself that I would need all that running gear, but I really do use it and it DOES come in handy!

I love your blog lay out, by the way! So cute!

Yeah, that purse. It's hideous. I think she should sell it and sponsor you. Just as a silent partner, so you don't have to associate with her, or that ugly purse.

Also, I play golf. The "rich man's" sport. Hehe. Which, it is. However, I think running is right up there. I've been running for 1 year and have accumulated more stuff than I can imagine. Luckily crazy running mom is the one that thinks I need it all...works for me. Hey - maybe she can sponsor you.

You're 100% right!

So Funny!

And I love how Heidi Montag has holes in her jeans to coordinate with her $23K bag....fashion....

I'll spend my pennies on my running, eh?

Heather,

It can be an expensive addiction, but being hooked on exercise and running marathons seems like a good way to spend money and stimulate the economy.

Good for you that you are dreaming big, 50 in 50 by 50.

I could never do a full ironman. I did a 1/2 ironman and thought I was going to die.

Love reading your posts :)

I agree - triathletes are crazy! I used to think that running was expensive until I started triathlon.

But believe me, I have done an Ironman it was worth every cent!
